Skegness - hell on earth!

I've just come back from a week in a caravan in Skegness with my sister, her 13 year old son and my ds and I just wanted to say how awful it was! I really don't care if I come across as a snob for saying this - it's a horrible place! Full of Burberry clad teenage parents pushing a buggy with one hand and simultaneously smoking a fag and drinking from a can of Special Brew with the other, children who are so high on sugar and tartazine that they couldn't stand still if their lives depended on it, shops selling all sorts of cheap and nasty crap, most of it highly unlikely to conform to BS or fire standards, and rows and rows of arcades and bingo halls full of said Burberry clad teenage parents and all with a fuggy cloud of cigarette smoke that hits you like a wall when you walk past. We had the misfortune to stay on a caravan site in Chapel St Leonards with an attached club that you simply cannot miss when you drive through this otherwise nice village; the club has a garish luminous orange facia complete with several ?golden? palms on the front that are actually the uniform luminous orange to match the rest of the facia (so they blend in with the surroundings I guess, though where orange palm trees are native to is a mystery) and these light up at night, giving the nauseous feeling that you?ve maybe had too many house cocktails even though it?s only 5pm! Inside the club there is a main part for adults and children over 14 and a part to the side for families with children under 14. None of it is non-smoking and it?s heartbreaking to see said Burberry clad teenage parents sitting drinking a pint and simultaneously smoking with one hand and playing bingo with the other, desperately trying to quieten babies and young children (?shut the fk up or I?ll break your f*g neck Kyle? was one method of oral chastisement I heard) with a bockle of fizzy orange in their pushchair, rocking it vigorously with their feet because their hands are full with pint, fag and bingo dabber.

I hated the club but unfortunately there weren?t many other places to go, and whilst I was more than happy to have an early night in the caravan, my sister went because it was better than sitting in the caravan ? how boring. Trouble is that even though quite a few members of our family were staying on the same caravan site and in the same club, she ended up sitting mostly on her own when I?d gone after about half an hour, so consequently we didn?t go out on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. On Thursday night we had a blazing row where she accused me of being a snob and looking down my nose at people, which I probably do without realising it, but I don?t care, that place is just not my idea of fun.

Don?t think I?ll be going on holiday to Skegness or with my sister again in a hurry!

Aww I have fond memories of Skeggy.

Staying a a big static caravan with gas powered lamps, having to run to the toilet block in the pouring rain, oily yuk on the beech, garish childrens sunglasses with no real uv protection whatsoever, bright red (pure sugar)dummies and giant round lollies with white writing on them, and sticks of rock almost as big as myself, and huuuge bags of candyfloss.

Ahh those were the days

Whitby, well most of the wee villages outside it are greeat for holidays with kids. Loads to do and see, but you'll need a car.

ginmummy I think this article might appeal to you:

here

I particularly liked this bit:

"I did wonder if there might be money to be made from a middle-class theme park, a place where Ing-ger-lund shirts are banned and you can get a nice chablis and a green salad and do nothing whatsoever for the rest of your life while the children attempt to replicate Giacomettis out of pipe cleaners. But it?s been done: they call it the Cotswolds."

PS. Went to Skegness as a child, was also deeply saddened by the things you described, but they did have a nice shop called Rendezvous which sold great gingerbread. I wonder if it is still there...?

Expat, have you ever been to Wisconsin Dells? It is the nearest thing to Skegness in the US that I have come across.

Skegness is our nearest bit of coast & it still takes 2 hours to get there!I have never spent more than 1 day there & know of the holiday park referred too!

I must be a snob too because we stayed on a site very similar to the one you described, the site itself was fine and the caravan was really nice, but the club was awfull, the kids club was just a room with a disco in, kids coming and going with a set of doors on each side so no control even if they did want to keep an eye, everywhere full of smoke, no where for parents to sit in the kids area to keep and eye and the area outsideit was just an extension of the bar.

I wasn't looking for childcare or even a kids activity programme. DD just wan't to go to the kids disco and dance make some freinds at night, but I couldn't stand it. Pool was a let down to well the changing area really. Glad we took the laptop to watch DVD's at night and tha caracan was nice enough to sit it and enjoy a drink in peace. Cheaper too .

I think you defo had the worst end of things at Chapel, that and Ingoldmells are chav central on sea, it makes Skeg itself look positivly upmarket , have to agree the beach is good there tho, just a shame about a week in a caravan in the rain, reminds me of my childhood....I'd defo go Scarboro in future or somewhere like Hemsby, in Norfolk, which is like Skeg was 30 years ago......

misdee · 06/08/2006 21:47

this is why i like butlins. the family clubs are non smoking, there is plenty to do on and off site, i didnt once step into the arcade when i went there in march. we went swimming, saw shows with bob the builder, free fun fair rides for the kids, went off-site to the town (yes that is a bit drab, but i got some cool boots reduced in Evans) went to the cinema on site, walked along the beach, took my mum to the market (i didnt like it that much tbh), and did lots of walking.

maybe i am a chav lol.

Frizbe · 06/08/2006 21:51

ahhh Misdee now't wrong with seeing Bob at Butlins, like you say totally different case and for £20 for a day pass for a family of four, a godsend in the Easter hols!

hanette · 19/11/2014 11:39

Skegness was so bracing I got Bell's palsy when I last visited in 1996

foslady · 20/11/2014 21:59

Not called Skegvegas for nothing y'know!!!Wink

MummyBtothree · 21/11/2014 08:08

I have to say, you are describing the holidaymakers not the locals. Im from Lincolnshire, if you visit out of season its very different. So please dont stereotype skeggy....its the jeremy kyle crew visitors that insist on holidaying there.

VivaLeBeaver · 30/11/2014 09:35

Yes 98% of the people you saw were other holiday makers. The locals stay away. I live fairly close (40 mins away) and in 40 years have been to Ingoldmells twice, Drove through Chapel once and have been to Skegness about three times.
