bonkers bonkers bonkers. Even if you replace it, PLEASE tell her it's the old one.

Isn't there studies that have been done somewhere saying too much cleanliness is causing all the increases in allergies and asthma. Don't know how much I believe it but it could be a good comeback.

You're probably right Secur. I just thought it was an odd thing to say about car seats in the attic.

Both of my children wear clothes (and, when they're at my mum's, play with toys) that have been in the loft for 30-something years since I was little. And they're fine! Things that have been well-wrapped I just air first, things that may be grubby or smell a little musty I wash.

I wanted to use the wicker cradle that was up there too, but dh felt it would be too dirty. He's a far neater, cleaner sort than me, and anyway, he wanted to buy new things for his firstborn!

Just wondered about the reasoning behind the reccomendation. The mattress was quite an expensive one with a cover that can be washed, is breathable etc and looks like new. DS used it from birth to 26 months. It has been stored in the loft inside an old duvet cover for 10 months now.

I would be careful if you had put the moses basket directly on the fibreglass loft insulation - the tiny fibres irritate skin - you are supposed to use gloves and dust mask when laying the stuff. A good vaccuum / dust may be required.

Re temp changes and car seat - surely no different to leaving the seat in the car through all seasons?? The temperature fluctuates in the car too. I would use it for a second child (my rock a tot is in a bin liner in the loft for next babe).

secur - I didn't read your post - great minds huh?

lou33 · 09/03/2004 15:23

That's ok secur. i thought you were saying the same as me, but wasn't entirely sure, so tried to be diplomatic!

I am reusing ds1's car seat for ds2 atm, although he needs a sn one, but we are broke right now, so it has to wait. I always thought as long as you didn't reuse one after it had been involved in an accident, it would be ok.

Sounds like our mattress will be OK - stored inside duvet cover in area of loft that has been boarded. Thanks DH.

Mum2Ela · 10/03/2004 10:17

Whats the point in having an attic if you can't store stuff to use again?

Clarinet60 · 10/03/2004 11:06

Another vote for re-using here. All our stuff has been stored and re-used. Just air it.

SoupDragon · 10/03/2004 11:56

Agree with everyone else - your mother is a fruitcake

Hoover it, wash/iron the fabric stuff and tell her you bought a new one in the same fabric.
