oh yes! I'm off tomorrow to buy a pair of running shoes and will soon be panting round the block

I'm a bit unfit tbh

please tell me what to do

also ditsy things like how do you stop an MP3 player with no case from bumping up and down?

and does it really, like Granny used to say, injure your knees running on pavements?

Tells you what to do here.

Could you hold the mp3 player in your hand?

Pavements can be an injury issue if you are a serial long-term pounder of the city streets, apparently. Worth skipping onto grass or earth when possible. Good running shoes will help your knees stay safe though.

ohh, cappucino, I so want to start running again!

Good for you!

When I started running 7 years ago I follow the advice on the web page beloow, and it was amazing that it did work, and after a few months I could actially run 3 miles!

I agree that a good shoe makes all the difference! Is hard to determine which one is good though! Any chance you can go run somewhere with a threadmill so you can "try" a few beforwe you commit to one?

Good luck!

Cappucino · 03/08/2006 20:08

thanks you two

I went to the nice man at the running shop and he watched me run up and down the street in a couple of pairs before deciding which one I should get. So I feel all well shod.

I have been out for my first run tonight. I felt very all-powerful and fantastic for the first two minutes.

Now I just want to go to bed

keep at it capp. I started but then it went all hot and horrible and so I gave it up. I am going to start again on holiday. Eek - that's 2 more days!

Northerner · 03/08/2006 20:16

Well done Capp for starting. It's hard to begin with but if you keep at it you'll soo be addicted. The scedule on that link is a good one to do. If you got proper running shoes you'll be fine (sounds like you went to a good shop)

I've recently started running again and fine the odd run with dh/friends really spurs me on, I seem to push myself that bit more. Also, if you are knackered after a few mins perhaps you are running too fast? I decided to concentrate on distance rather than speed and can run 30/40 minutes now. Did a quick 20 mins tonight and I love it.

Cappucino · 03/08/2006 20:17

rofl at the idea I'm going too fast

you've obviously never seen me run

Disappointed in my performance really. Can't imagine that I could run for 20 minutes without stopping. Like the look of the schedule though

mustrunmore · 03/08/2006 20:18

I'll br watching this thread with interset; ds2 is almost 6 months, and I've only managed to fit in half a dozen 15 min runs

mustrunmore · 03/08/2006 20:19

sorry for spelling.. babe in arms

Northerner · 03/08/2006 20:20

cappucino, just a thought.

Northerner · 03/08/2006 20:21

Meant to say that last year I got terible shin splints from road running, but I ignored them thinking they would get better. Pain in teh shins should not be ignored. So agree woth hopping onto grass if it's available.

FullOfTestosterone · 03/08/2006 21:04

Congrats capuccino!
As long as keep getting out there, it will get better! I promisse. " minutes in the first day is great! You see in that schedule, you really not expected to do much more...

ahem, if I may ask, do you Los? and if so, when do you manage to go running?

I keep planning to go after bedtime, but confess I get a bit scared to go out on my own...

Cappucino · 03/08/2006 21:05

do I Los?

?

FullOfTestosterone · 03/08/2006 21:20

Sorry... I meant to say, do you have LOs?...

Just wondering how other mums juggle theit time...

If you have a Womens running network group near you get in touch with them. I did and its been great. At the mo I can only make their track session due to baby bedtime, but I go along and get my exercise and some coaching and lots of encouragement. All women, many of them have kids, most have been unfit and remeber whats its like to start exercising.
