Today i accompanied my boss and her dd of 7 wks too baby clinic, i went to as this was her first time driving with the baby after her c-section.

We arrived at the clinic and a hv turned up late, not a word of apology to the 4 waiting parents and got on with the weighing, my boss was informed that she [hv] weighs baby with clothes on and estimated that long sleeved vest, tights, socks and nappy was 200g, she then entered it into another babies red book and was telling my boss that baby had lost a fair amount of weight since last weigh in.

Boss calls me over and i listen to hv and a check of the book shows the last age at weigh in was 18 wks of age.

HV has written in this book and says, oh dear.

She then got our book and wrote the weight in without taking off the guess clothing weight of 200g.

We left in disgust and boss was very upset and has phoned her surgery to tell them as all babies in the area are encouraged to attend this clinic for weigh ins.

Last time we visited the clinic babies were undressed by parent/carer and placed by them into old metal scale pan on paper and lifted out and dressed by same person, said paper in scale and on changing mat was then discarded.

Her reason for weighing with clothes on is to prevent cross contamination...uhh

As we were leaving i heard her say to a first time mum visiting the clinic that ds was wearing 200g of clothing and they would take it from the total, he was a wearing fleece tracksuit and vest and socks and nappy...200g my *&^%.

Upon our return home i weighed new nappy and clothes...just 130g, and baby shows a good weigh gain.

oh dear indeed

That HV sounds like a proper dozy mare. DS has never been weighed with his clothes on. What an odd practice.

babies until a year old should be weighed naked. that HV just sounds lazy to me.

Very, at peads baby was weighed with clean nappy only because we were also collecting a urine sample, and nappy was weighed first so correct deduction could be made.

Sad to say but the number of midwifes and hv i have contact with as a maternity nanny is large and most i wouldn't trust to advise on a dead goldfish let alone baby issues.
