Is purple a 'girl's' colour?

Dd had a really nice purple fleece which I've just put onto ds2, but I'm worried (not too much!) that people will think he's a girl...

I'd say lilac was girly, but not a dark purple. Ds1 has got a purple hooded top with a skateboarder on it, and he looks suitably 'macho'

You'll know because you'll wince every time he wears it if you're not comfortable with it.... so send him out and see. If its dark I think it'd be OK with jeans etc.

DS2's school now has sweatshirts in a glorious deep "royal" purple, they look gorgeous.

WideWebWitch · 06/03/2004 20:36

No, it's not girly IMO. Unless it's lilac and then I agree, it is.

My 6 month DS2 was wearing a red fleece the other day and the shop assistant in Asda thought he was a girl... Mind you she also thought that my two were twins (there's 18 months between them) so maybe I shouldn't pay any attention to her opinion anyway!

So how do I persuade MiL not to change ds into the lilac trousers (which I'm sure are for a girl) she's bought every time he spends a couple of hours with them? Have to say ds doesn't seem worried by it, but he might get some strange reactions if they take him out like that!

ponygirl · 07/03/2004 09:32

I think we definitely have a consensus here: purple good for boys, lilac not! GillW, those trousers must be for a girl, have never seen lilac for a boy. Can your ds have a terrible non-washable painting accident in them? Or do baking with red icing? That cochineal stuff never comes out! Thanks everyone!

In some countries you would see lilac on boys (france, italy, spain, mexico). I think it's a cultural thing. GillW, is your mother a foreigner ()

whoops meant mil

Sofia - not exactly - though she is Welsh, if that counts? (Apologies in advance to anyone Welsh )

Well I was in a shop this morning, ds2 in the purple fleece, navy trousers and navy soft shoes with skull & crossbones on them, and someone said "Ooo, look at that little girl..." !?! Argh!

Don't worry about that Ponygirl, I had someone say "what a lovely little boy" about my dd who was wearing a pink DRESS. FFS!

MrsCodswallop · 08/03/2004 14:28

I would say Yes it is.

ponygirl · 08/03/2004 14:33

Splurted tea everywhere, Countess!
