I always said over my dead body would ds watch powerrangers - he has an extensive collection of these videos (too embarrassed to admit how many)
No chocolate or sweets - gave in as soon as I realised it kept him quiet
I could go on and on...

Any others or are you all perfect?

A cousin of mine had a dummy,( i remember this when i was tiny), and now dd has one! She's just gone 3 but still loves it!!!

Also, my dad used to drive me CRAZY when i was growing up by saying "That's it..end of story",
I cringed but find myself saying it!!!

Lisa78 · 05/03/2004 22:32

With DS2, use the tv as a babysitter... bad mummy!
With DS1, he was never going to be into football or Thomas the bleeding tank engine, but he is and he was
du du du duuuuuuuu, du du du duuuuuuuuu - AAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH Thomas....
Other than that, I am of course perfect Hercules (locking them in the garden shed when we want a night out doesn't count does it )

Children's television, particularly the Teletubbies. I remember sneering at them (pre-children, hah! what did I know), but they do have an amazing hypnotic effect on the under-3s. I really remember being disapproving about small children watching TV - ROFL at myself now (bitterly).

emkana · 05/03/2004 22:36

I had planned not only not to use the TV as a babysitter, but not to let my children watch any TV at all until they were at least 3. Ha! I've hardly ever watched any programmes with dd1, it's just too tempting to get on and do stuff... Very, very bad mummy I am!

hercules · 05/03/2004 22:36

I also said I would never ignore my child to go on the internet and let them watch tv.
Hurrah for spongebob square pants on Nick as I type.

  • Dummys
  • Power Rangers
  • TV instead of reading
  • PS2 instead of painting
  • travelling by car instead of walking
  • staying inside on a nice day
  • eating the last of the jammie dounuts - when there are apples in the fruit bowls
  • giving calpol when the illness is dubious
  • sleeping in my bed when they are better
  • going to bed late when I know they are knackered
  • not doing homework because we ar e tired and emotional
  • leaving them in the car to go into buy a paper
  • telling them not to answer the phone when I know it's MIL ( caller display )

.... I could go on forever ...

But ( in truth ) I usually explain ... becuase I think it's important for them to know that adults are not infallible

charlieplus3 · 05/03/2004 22:42

Oh god herc, with you there only i use Noddy.

Said i would never say 'in a min'as a delay tactic but do about fifty times a day.

Plus i send her off to get something just so i can finish what im doing. Then act as if i was waiting for her when she returns

I just say "I love you" (expectantly)... ds1 falls for it every time, though in a world-weary sort of way.

have started saying "because I said so", also "hang on a minute" (all the time), "just a sec...", "I'm just [making tea/checking email/looking at mumsnet...].

And I'm always sending dd (3) up to her room to get toys/books, it's 2 floors up, while I check mumsnet - and yes, always hoping she gets distracted while she's there...

ponygirl · 05/03/2004 22:59

This is why I LOVE mumsnet. I feel so much better about being crap!

SHIREENSMOM · 06/03/2004 01:25

ponygirl i do that to my dd too,

incywincy · 06/03/2004 02:14

tv, chocolate and mcdonalds - but in my defence chocolate and mcdonalds are only occasionally. tv however.... :-(

zebra · 06/03/2004 07:54

Letting them wee (and more) in public places, including in drains, behind bushes in the park...YOU try asking a 24month-old to wait 5 minutes. Letting them sleep with me or wake me up most nights past 6 months old, sweets, bribes, travelling in a car without a proper carseat, riding in a pushchair much past 2yo.

zebra · 06/03/2004 07:54

...But we don't have a TV or dummies...

WideWebWitch · 06/03/2004 08:38

Yep, I said that no choclate or junk food would EVER pass his lips. Ha!
Said I'd never use the tv as a babysitter (like Lisa78) but guess who's watching Baby Mozart now...
Good thread.

eddm · 06/03/2004 08:56

I was planning to use washable nappies as didn't seem right to kill the planet when he's going to need it... but that box of Pampers I got 'just for the first few days' has been replaced about 1,000 times now. In my defence, did try biodegradable disposables but they were useless.

motherinferior · 06/03/2004 10:16

Dummies
Telly
'not now darling'
Shouting
Public bottom-sniffing
Formula instead of expressing during the working week (with dd1)
Home birth (with dd2)
Can I stop now?

we are all pretty similar arent we?

tv
sweets/chocolate/crisps
sleeping in our bed
ready meals (only occassionally)
McDonalds

dont feel such a bad Mum now

monkeygirl · 06/03/2004 12:27

Lots of these are the same for me.

Chocs and biscuits
Convenience 'kids' food
Using tv as a babysitter/rest for me
Bribing dd to be quiet/be good in public spaces (I always carry a 'bribery' pack now)
Shouting
Not explaining why when she asks (my usual response now is 'because it is' )

Don't think I can bear to confess any more...

mummytojames · 06/03/2004 12:32

put ds infront of the tv just for five minuites peace and not reading him a bed time story every night (being honest though he used to try and grab the book to throw it and me out of the bedroom my bed room lol)and winnie the pooh i think i got a complex about winnie the pooh. haveing a dessert more than once a week for his tea. snacking when he's ill (teething) instead of making him eat proper meals and finaly phoning my mother to ask for advice and to tell her every time he does something because im so proud give ita while and i could add more to that lol
