Renting a flat - is this impossible with a dog?

My friend's husband has been having an affair - they are splitting up and she will need to sell her house and move into rented accommodation.
Not only does she have this to cope with but she thinks she will have to lose her beloved dog as well as landlords seem to ban pets.
Is it possible to find rented accommodation with a dog or is it really a lost cause do you think?
It will break her heart to lose her dog...

Some landlords do allow pets, just check with the rental agency who are dealing with the property Some do state No Dss /No smoking /No pets and No children, depends on the property really and the landlord..I'm sure she will find one..

It seems to be the case in my area

When we were renting (before we bought this house), most land-lords had a "blanket ban" on pets. We had a cat and after a bit of negotiating they were quite happy with us having the cat but a lot of them stated definately no dogs.

She'll have a job IME. Most seem to state no pets and very often, no children too. I have tried pointing out that people with children often make less mess and noise than single childless twentysomethings who will have parties, get in late and possibly trash the place etc but it's never changed anyone's mind yet. What did once though was offering 2 months deposit and 6 months cash rent in advance (I really wanted that house, can you tell?).

WWW - my friend is having the same problem - noone will even rent to couples with children in her area. Offering rent in advance might be an option though - thanks for that excellent advice

Scoobysnax, just a thought but does she HAVE to move out? Surely she's likely to be able to keep the house if the children are with her and he had an affair?

WideWebWitch · 04/03/2004 12:08

ooo great minds twiglett.

I think it will depend on where you live. Country properties tend to be more lenient on pets etc. Some farms have flats that they rent out and these would usually accept pets. A friend lives in a rented house and has a dog - not sure about flats though.

She has no children , only the dog. I think she wants a new start.
The dog gets walked for miles and miles every day - they would miss each other like mad.

Where i live south they do except dogs in some places but as someone has said you need to check with agencies landlords etc some places dont except nothing others are more flexi if i was her i would just start looking and see what she can find or phone some agencies and see what they say!
Goodluck.
