Driving myself bonkers here - someone posted a fab link to a storm website on a thread last night and I can't find it!

Was it this one ??

Misspiggy · 27/07/2006 11:26

Here you are - it's great isn't it?! thunder radar Not much showing atm but fingers crossed for more storms tonight - I just love them (saddo that I am!)

Dottydot · 27/07/2006 11:55

Yes, it's the thunder radar one! Could barely bring myself to go to bed last night, I was so transfixed watching it.

Thanks - I can keep an eye on it at work now..!

No problem DD. Sounds like you're having a quiet day at work, like I am!!

TheLadyVanishes · 27/07/2006 14:13

why can't i see it, there is a kind of cup in the left hand corner??

Sparkler1 · 27/07/2006 14:15

I thought we were going to have a huge storm but didn't have anything in the end. Radar showed it as on top of us. Had about three flashes of lightening, no thunder and a bit of rain. It's flippin hot here again today so maybe it'll be here later.

zephyrcat · 27/07/2006 14:21

That site looks really good - wish I could make more sense of it!!

I love storms. The one we had night before last was the first time I've ever been scared by a storm, it was that loud. We had another fantastic one last night with not so much noise but huge forks of lightening.

zephyrcat · 27/07/2006 14:22

Sparkler did you get any of the huge storm last night?

SaintGeorge · 27/07/2006 14:27

We had a massive storm in the early hours.

Woke me up at 3.15am and went on until after 4.30am.

The lightening seemed almost constant as did the low growl of thunder in the background. Every now and then there was an enormous cracking sound as if the roof was getting hit, whenever a big roll of thunder came over. All the car and house alarms where going off.

zephyrcat · 27/07/2006 14:31

Whereabouts are you SG? Wonder if it was the same one..... We watched it come over from the sea and travel right over our house and then off behind us heading North. As it came towards us there was a really strong smell of salt as it was bringing the sea air in - was quite a surreal thing! I've never seen storms as big as the ones we've had here (southampton). Sat for about an hour with all the lights out watching the lightening!

whoopsfallenoveragain · 27/07/2006 14:34

zephyrcat - I'm glad you heard the one the night before last as I mentioned it to people and they thought I was mad even though a house got struck that night - I had fun watching the one last night too although I did feel that it was too close!

SaintGeorge · 27/07/2006 14:35

Hull (North East Coast almost)

zephyrcat · 27/07/2006 14:38

Whoops - I'm glad you heard it too! DP slept through it (!?!?!?!) but it was the loudest storm I've ever heard in my life - like it was right in the back garden!

zephyrcat · 27/07/2006 14:40

So how does the storm site work? Most of it is obvious but what is the key for all the symbols and letters?

whoopsfallenoveragain · 27/07/2006 14:43

Yes I hear it - it scared the cr@p out of me to start with and then when car/house alarms went off after the loudest one I didn't like lying by the window!

Sparkler1 · 27/07/2006 14:45

zephrycat - I don't think so. Unless I was in such a deep sleep that I missed - that would be a first for me though - never usually miss it. I'm normally a quivering wreck under the duvet.
We had about three flashes of lightening and a bit of rain. No thunder.

Sparkler1 · 27/07/2006 16:22

Just been looking at that radar thingy and the storms seem to be creeping up on us again.

Sparkler1 · 27/07/2006 16:24

btw Zephry - I'm not sure what all those things mean either.

bran · 27/07/2006 16:41

There's a key way down at the bottom

  • CG Positive cloud to ground strike
  • CG Negative cloud to ground strike
  • IC Positive in cloud or intracloud strike
  • IC Negative in cloud or intracloud strike

So pink (or purple perhaps) crosses, and blue x's are lightning that hits the ground and triangles are the ones that are in the clouds.

It is quite scary isn't it? It looks as though two big thunder storms are going to bump into each other somewhere near London. I'll laugh if it does as my work are having their summer party on a boat on the Thames, they'll be like drowned rats.

bran · 27/07/2006 16:46

I've just noticed that they use different colours and symbols on the top picture (why?????) and I was looking at the second map. The letters are the same though (+cg/-cg etc)

zephyrcat · 27/07/2006 16:46

Thanks Bran

Sparkler1 · 27/07/2006 20:32

oooh my head hurts - far too much useage of ones brain
