I did about 20 lessons when I was 29. I was in the same situation as you - kids having lessons and getting better than me.
They can still swim better now but at least i can swim 25m breast stroke, back stroke and float. All things that I couldn't do before.
I had lessons on a Sunday evening at the local council run pool when it was closed to the public. We were put in 3 groups:- non-swimmers(that I started in), intermediate(that I progressed to) and advanced(never got that far). I got great support from the teachers and we all supported each other. i would recommend it!

I have learned things like breast stroke/back stroke from the kids lessons and prctising with them . Its things like going under and I can't put my face in and I thought If I went to lessons I'd have to and couldn't avoid it!

Yes, you can learn those sort of things as well. The coach used to ask me what I hoped to achieve.
Alternatively, if its just a few techiques you want to pick up, a few private 1 to 1 lessons with an instructor might work better. Ask at the leisure centre. They do tend to be when the pool is open to the public though.

Yes! Both me and dh are currently doing them.

Me to improve my fitness and stamina at an advanced course and dh because he has never learnt. He was embarrassed to start with as he had to wear a tummy band but as he was in the same boat as all the others there, he soon got over that. The teachers have been fab too, really encouraging and helpful. He has stuck at it for 6 months now despite threatening to give up every time he goes!

Give your local pool a ring and take the plunge now!!

God, i should be on commissiion!!

Just got back from a week's beach n pool holiday and I wish I could swim better. Might have another set of lessons in September. ( I had to abandon the last lot when I did my knee in.

I have had swimming lessons. I loved them! I did them at the council-run pool. They cost about £5 for 45 minutes, three in a class. Worth every penny I think. I could sort of swim, in a head out the water, make-up intact style, but now I wear my goggles with pride and can actually go to the "lane swim" sessions. Go for it!
