i have choked on these things - which we loaded w/alcohol as 'jelly shots', of course - as an adult.

Well I give my DD(8) raw jelly and I eat it myself - but I think I started giving her it at about 3 or 4

I think it is patently unsuitable for a toddler

It is very good for your nails and hair (but that might be an old wives tale)

psychomum5 · 25/07/2006 22:15

and and cos I have let mine eat raw jelly before.

never ever would have thought that this could be a risk....am horrified. Just shows tho that we never know everything.

I was as shocked about the grapes risk too!

poor baby

i think basic first aid will have been good. dont put a child flat on their back to remove the opbstruction, putr them across your knees and pat on the back with some force. IIRC. i need a referesher course myself.

It is sad for that child's family.

However, all foodstuffs are a potential choking hazard whatever your age.

misdee · 25/07/2006 22:19

oops, was that the little girl in welwyn?

psychomum5 · 25/07/2006 22:20

my DS1 choked on a piece of satsuma once and that was a cut up piece too. I guess that, yes, anything could be a cause of choking really in the right (tho tragic) circumstances

Very sad accident but that's exactly what it is. A lump of raw jelly is no different to a similar-sized sweet and plenty of us have let our toddlers eat those. And how many of us still cut up grapes after the first baby?

crazydazy · 26/07/2006 15:14

How sad and how horrible for the parents watching your child die that way and not been able to help

I am always paranoid about things like that, fortunately mine are older now.
