Anyone tried to not wash their hair?

There was an article in the Daily Mail a couple of weeks ago about various women trying to go without washing their hair. I've heard before that eventually your hair 'cleans' itself and can become shiny and healthy as a result of foregoing detergents.
My dd and I have kept it up for 2 weeks but my hair just feels revolting at the moment.
My daughters hair however, is beautiful, soft and shiny.
Anyone else tried it and how long did you last?

To be honest I just did this as an experiment, after reading an article in the paper.
I've suffered with eczema on my scalp and dandruff for years, this also seems to have cleared up, no more scabby scalp!!
I have been wearing my hair scraped back in a ponytail for the last five weeks and only the last few days have I been able to brush it out and wear it down, the greasy looking stage has passed now.

Incidentally,my dd7, accidentally, washed her hair in the bath this morning and it has lost its shine, gone darker and has gone all tangly again.
She is really upset as she was really proud of it before and actually enjoyed brushing her hair!!! In the past she used to hate it as it was so unruly.

Back to the wee thing, I was told to use two day old urine, which I kept in a lidded bucket. It was quite horrible putting my feet in it, and the smell was v. unpleasant but my feet came up sooo clean!!
Have to say I haven't braved it again though!

If I dont wash my hair for a while (say three days) then my dandruff gets terrible and my scalp gets all itchy and lumpy. I HAVE to wash my hair every day to keep it at bay.

My mate hasn't washed her hair for 10 years - just rinses in shower. It's gorgeous BUT she is half-Afro-Caribbean & half-Spanish, so has long, curly, dark hair. Doubt it would work on blonde/mousy/straight/chemically treated hair tbh.

I wouldn't have believed it until I tried it!!

wow runnerbean! very

i'd love to do this but am petrified of the greasy stage. my hair looks REVOLTING by the end of the day, let alone week if i don't wash it. did you get any comments while in the greasy stage?

now i wonder what happens when you go and get a haircut and they wash it... is all the good work undone?

cheeryface · 19/08/2006 22:34

my hair is really greasy if i just miss one day of washing it. would the greasiness really go away if i left it?

themoon66 · 19/08/2006 23:03

Ooh yes, what about trips to hairdresser for cutting??? Do they refuse to handle unwashed hair??

wartywarthog · 19/08/2006 23:31

ok - i have a game plan. i'm going to cut my shampoo by half for a week (or until it stops being greasy), then by half again and so-on until i don't need any. just can't face a month of greasy hair! hoping the gradual approach will work.

will let you all know how it goes!

To get through the greasy stage I scraped it back whilst wet and tied into a ponytail which I then plaited. Nobody has mentioned if my hair looked greasy because it looked as if I'd just put product in it.
As for the hairdresser, my cousin cuts my hair so it isn't a problem.
When my hair was at its worst I put raw egg in it then rinsed through thoroughly after with cool water. Adding a bit of vinegar to the water adds to shine too, but again, rinse lots.

I dont think it would work for my style though. A sharp geometeric bob. Perhaps its only ok if you have long flowing free type locks.

wartywarthog · 20/08/2006 23:14

agree themoon - i also have shortish hair. no chance of scraping it back. well, first day of half-amount shampoo. feels and looks ok

Just to add my pennyworth - my mate did this years ago. It took her 7 weeks - I remember vividly, cause she suffered the greasy phase for 6 weeks and then got head lice and had to wash them out! (This was in the old days when chemicals were used by everyone!) She started again and made it through to 7 weeks second time and had gorgeous hair, really thick and beautiful, with no shampoo again. We were told that the hair produces natural oils which clean the hair with just water to help wash out any grime.

I never had the courage to look grotty for 7 weeks!
