Moral dilemma number two million and ninety three, what would you do?

I've changed my name but don't mind really if anyone recognises me.

I started a new job this year but because I didn't start on Jan 1 my holiday entitlement isn't a full years worth. Today I asked the PA who books holidays if I had enough holiday left to book certain dates and she said yes. But I was standing next to her and saw that she had this in a spreadsheet and was calculating days using a spreadsheet with the full entitlement as a starting point and I actually have 10 days less than this because I didn't start on Jan 1.

As I'm typing I know the answer I suppose, I should own up shouldn't I? Had I emailed (but I didn't!) her instead of going over I'd never have known she was calculating it incorrectly.

But since I do know, should I own up? It almost certainly won't be discovered if I don't.

Nah don't own up. Equally dishonest Polgara .

Tinker · 25/07/2006 19:16

I'd own up but I'm a puff.

Don't own up, but be prepared for the fact that if it is discovered that you have exceeded your entitlement they may withdraw authorisation for you to take it, or, honour it but have you take it as unpaid leave.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/07/2006 19:18

Whats a puff?

ilovecaboose · 25/07/2006 19:18

Do you get paid through a central type office? If so they will probably notice even if noone does at your end - especially if they put it all on a computer programme (that is often preprogrammed to know these things).

Think about it this way - if they notice but have already agreed to the holiday they probably won't pay you for it or if they notice it later then they may well ask you to pay it back.

Question is - can you afford to go without the money (however slim the chance of them noticing it), if yes don't mention it, if not then you should.

On moral grounds of course you should own up immediately (however how many of us would actually do that) hth

ilovecaboose · 25/07/2006 19:19

Ok I took a really long time to answer that post (only one reply when I started) - VVVQ put it so much better than I did.

Tinker · 25/07/2006 19:20

a puff is a big wimp

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/07/2006 19:24

LOL ILC!

Tinker, I thought it may have been a mis-spelling of Poof

Tinker · 25/07/2006 19:26

A poof, surely, is a gay man

SecurMummy · 25/07/2006 19:28

I would decide if I needed the money more or the time, if you need the money own up, if you are prepared to take unpaid leave if it gets discovered then keep stum and hope it doesn't!

Yours Badmummy

VeniVidiVickiQV · 25/07/2006 19:29

Tinker

saadia · 25/07/2006 19:31

Are you sure she has calculated incorrectly? I'm really ignorant about these things and am probably completely wrong but maybe you get the same amount of holiday as everyone else over a year, so from whenever you started this year to the same time next year. Apologies if this is a daft approach.

pseudonim · 25/07/2006 19:32

The money isn't an issue, I will be paid or it will be deducted IF it's discovered. I don't think it will be discovered via online tracking, although I could be wrong as I'm not sure how exactly that works where I work. But I'd rather have the time than the money. Other opinions welcome, I'd like a consensus really!

pseudonim · 25/07/2006 19:33

Oh saadia, I hadn't thought of that. If it's calculated from start date then I am entitled to that. If it's from the beginning of the year then I'm not.

OP posts:
Tinker · 25/07/2006 19:37

Think saadia's is a good point. Our leave year starts from day start job. In fact, I would send a blase sounding email asking when does your leave year start.

SecurMummy · 25/07/2006 19:37

Somecompanies calculate from 1st jan, some from the start of the tax year, some from the start of their personal business year, I don't know any who do it on start dates as this ould be complex for more than a few employees.

It is possible she was right, as you do not know and you are not too worried about the money then I would continue witht hte stum plan

Tinker · 25/07/2006 19:39

Our leave year start dates are all over the place, huge govt dept. Always from the 1st but can be from any month. In fact, have just changed mine for money reasons.

Posey · 25/07/2006 19:41

How big is the company you work for? If it was me and I worked for a big rich company then I'd keep quiet. If I worked for a small group then I'd probably own up.
(Same thing if I'm wrong changed in my favour; I'd tell the corner shop but not Sainsburys)

pseudonim · 25/07/2006 19:41

big, rich.

Pseudinom give the PA the benefit of the doubt and/or don't get her into trouble by querying her decision

pseudonim · 25/07/2006 19:44

I like your thinking Carmenere
