Leather Sofas

Does anyone have any suggestions of products to use for cleaning a cream leather sofa? I've tried quite a few different leather cleaners and they've all been pretty useless. We're in rented accommodation and the landlord left some leather stuff for us to use which was fantastic, but it didn't come from this country - typical! Any suggestions would be very gratefully received!

Sounds strange but use the same stuff they use to clean saddles. Saddle soap, its is a mixture of beeswax and oils & glycerin. There are many ones on the market for upholstery now. Takes all the grime off and buffs the leather giving it a protective layer. You can buy it online or somewere like Homebase may be ?? have a look here for products.

I forgot , firstly you need to know what type of leather u have. Is it corrected(a layer of solvent has been applied and then laquered) or is it anniline (nearly natural hyde that has just been dyed & waxed)??? Annilines shold just be lightly waxed, corrected grains you can use a gentle saddle soap or just a drop of fairy liquid in a lot of water(but dont soak).

some more info here .

Thanks very much - I think it's aniline because it's very soft leather. I particularly like the bit in your link, bossykate, where it says leather furniture "should require little attention and any cleaning should be done only when necessary"

I shall have a go with the fairy liquid then, seeing as that's something we've got already!

kando-- dont know if you're still needing something, i saw a leather cleaner and restorer on a shopping channel, have you got sky? I will try and find the name, phone number, etc. If u still need, or did the fairy work?

Furball · 02/03/2004 21:41

I assume my whip round with a wet wipe is not recommended then!

noddy5 · 02/03/2004 21:45

Liberon leather cream cleaner is good I think you can get it at DIY stores

Hulababy · 02/03/2004 21:46

Furball - wet wipes are fab at cleaning our leather sofa

Seriously though, ours is the distressed look leather and they really do keep it clean, as we were told not to use a leather cleaner on it.

kando · 03/03/2004 12:05

Champs - no I don't have Sky, but don't worry I don't think I'll bother. I haven't yet tried the fairy liquid as I gave the sofa a quick wipe with the last of the stuff we already had the other day.

We've got some leather cleaner from that car place, ummmmm, Halfords. We've got leather in our car and DH bought it for that, however DD got hold of a blue biro recently and proceeded to scrawl on the pale leather sofa (less than 6mo old) . MAJOR panic..... Went straight to the cupboard and tried the leather cleaner. It did work but I had to use a pan-scrub type thing with it though. TAmazingly enough, the sofa is a very soft, buttery leather and the scrub did absolutely no damage to it but brought it up beautifully. I'll find out the brand name for you and get back..
