I'm open to having my mind changed on this one, if you guys could give me some good reasons for having a monarchy in this country, other than for giving out awards and street parties...

I like the idea of a small airgun targeted at royal buttocks.

southeastastra · 23/07/2006 21:05

they really don't bother me, they've always been here. they are good ambassadors for the country,

do you all really dislike it, i'm quite suprised.

Fastasleep · 23/07/2006 21:07

I agree with the 'their just normal people' stance, to me it doesn't really matter about their blood lines (although, good point!) we shouldn't be bowing and scraping for them anyway.

i respect the queen in that she does seem to take her role very seriously. she's married to a twat, however.

her kids aren't worthy of her.

we're Scots, and Bonnie Prince Charlie was really the rightful male heir.

expatinscotland · 23/07/2006 21:10

well of course i don't buy all that shit part of it, south.

i'm an American, for one.

i don't think they lord it over people, they strike me as figureheads whose role is to bring tourist money in.

they're not the issue, the bloody 'house of lords' is folks! non-elected officials who actually have a say in what really happens.

Fastasleep · 23/07/2006 21:10

Good ambassadors? What about the news stories on Charles's dumb and un PC jokes etc?

I wouldn't want people to think that people in our country are laaadeedaaa drink your tea with a finger stuck out chilled cucumber sandwhich eaters...

What I don't like is that they preserve and preside over the class structure which has kept this country in a stanglehold for centuries.
They're at the top of a system which grants hereditary peerages and other such inequities which have no place in a modern society.

They need to slink into a a more backseat position, slim down vastly, and be generally more accountable. I think they are doing this, but too slowly.

expatinscotland · 23/07/2006 21:14

exactly, spider! this 'house of lords' business. i mean, wtf is that about? nah, that wrankles me.

interestingly enough, whilst visiting Blair Castle, we learned that the present Duke Atholl refuses to use any of his hereditary titles and lives in Africa.

southeastastra · 23/07/2006 21:15

i used to get riled up about the monarchy, but just don't anymore!

Fastasleep · 23/07/2006 21:15

I can't spell sandwich!

I don't feel like I know enough about the house of lords to comment really, but sounds the same kind of thing it niggles me
