making tiny room look bigger????

hi - any interior design/ diy experts out there.
We are just having a TINY cloakroom fitted (basically just big enough to fit small loo and sink in).
Got to go and get the tiles and wondering if anyoen has any ideas on how to avoidd making it look any smaller.
Was going to go for textured white wall tiles and then maybe grey slate floor tiles.
Have no idea about these things - would this help stop 'crowding' it even more.
Thanks!

A big mirror?

misdee · 02/03/2004 10:50

yeah, just keep it plain and simple. hang a mirror in there somewhere, spot lights or plain shade.

A white ceiling will give the impression of height, and a dark one will make it feel lower. Do all the walls and ceiling white ,imo.

oops sorry about that, shaky hands!

Also, recessed lights in the ceiling would maximise space. A shade hanging down can feel really in the way. If you can't do that, then get a shade that lies as flat as possible against the ceiling. Ikea do nice ones for about £3.

Big mirror in loo might me a bit scary, though!

Hate to disagree - but if it is all white - ie white loo, basin, tiles and walls it will look very clinical.
If it were me I owuld keep it plain and simple as already stated. Presume you have white loo and basin. I would keep a neutral floor and walls - the same colour - maybe a creamy colour, keep tiles to a minimum - maybe just the splash back. Be clever with lighting - spot lights are best. Room for a large mirror ?, window? - if so simple blinds, no fussy curtins - aplogies for typing - this site seems so so slow todY!

agree with the white colour scheme and mirror. also, get a sink and loo that attach to the wall, not the floor (iyswim), which will increase the feeling of space.

We're having a tiny ensuite refitted and were advised to go for large plain white tiles and suite to keep it simple and spacious. Another tip I've heard is to lay the floor so that the length of the tiles or pattern goes away from the door if you need to balance length of the room or across if you need the illusion of it being wider. If you have a window a tidy blind such as a roman blind could give both colour and a minimalist window dressing for privacy. Large mirror will reflect the light and make the room seem larger but perhaps soft lighting above it will make the room less severe.

Thankyou for all the ideas!!
No window so will have to settle for mirrors.
Sonnett - thats what I was worried about - ie. it looking too clinical.

Great tip on which way to lay the floor - and hadnt even thought of the lights so will def go for spotlights.

Here's to no more having to queue to use the loo!
