Hiya

Just a quick question about selling on ebay. How easy is it to do? Is it worth doing on a small scale.. Am talking about 10 items max.

TIA

it's really easy you just follow the instructions if only 10 items i'd wait till 5p listings day will hopefuly be one coming up soon.

FuglyDucking · 22/07/2006 23:32

How much are listings other wise? Am looking to free up space/hopefully make some cash ASAP as am due to move in a few weeks!! Is it worth setting up a pay pal account? Or just doing cash?

erm i think they are normally 40 p or something it depends what pics you add etc. Definately set up a paypal account.

Skribble · 23/07/2006 00:10

You pay a listing fee, fees for extras like Gallery options which is worth it- other extras not worth it, final value fees and paypal fees (depending on type of account). Fees

You can list it as an auction or fixed price, depends on what you are selling but second hand you will probably go for auction.

Make the most of the title, use most of the characters, spell it correctly and use alternative words. Means more people will find your items when searching. Ie childs, kids, toddler, infant. or Kitchen, cooking, food, If it is similar to a brand name add that too i.e. like boden or like birkenstock. Don't waste letters by putting things like LOOK or Bargain as people don't search for that.

Always add a picture, a good clear picture if it is a more expensive item add more pictures or if selling lots it might be worth paying for Picture manager which gives you endless pictures for a monthly charge.

Make sure you check postage weight, don't guess, weigh it with packaging. New pricing structure coming in in August. Present prices New Prices

Skribble · 23/07/2006 00:12

Meant to add when giving postal prices add enough to cover packaging and trip to PO. You can list post prices with 2nd class first so it looks cheaper than having 1st class first. IYKWIM

Sorry don't follow Skribble.

Finally, how do I know how much to charge for things? Have some brandnew jeans with some of the tags on, unworn. How would I go about pricing them?

TIA

Ebay don't actually like people putting 'like X brand' in their listings, it's one of the things they specifically tell you not to do iirc (and it's ruddy annoying when people do it too )

serenity · 23/07/2006 01:04

Keyword spamming

FuglyDucking · 23/07/2006 01:09

Thanks Serenity.

Isn't is easy as it looked lol so i'm glad I checked on here first

I do quite a bit of e-bay selling, but am in the U. S., but I think (hope) a lot of this will apply to you.

First of all, check out the discussion boards. They can be found bu clicking on the community tab on the top of each page, then click on discussion boards. They have lots of information, and like MN, have many people with lots of experience to help and answer your questions. That is by far where I learned the most about selling. I can't recommend them enough. The UK ones seem a bit slower in the brief second I looked at them. If they don't help much, check out the US ones. E-bay also has tutorials to help new sellers.

If you want to find out what your jeans have been going for, click on advanced search, type in what kind of jeans you have, and then check the box for completed listings only. That will show you what they have been selling for.

Many full-time sellers will actually tell you to stay away from reduced fee listing days. Unless the item you are selling is rare or in very high demand, everyone and their dog sells on those days, and sellers find that their items often sell for much less, or not at all because there is a flooding of merchandise on those days, so listing on those days to save a few pennies (or pence in your case) can actually cost you more than you save.

I think what Skribble is telling you to do is when you are listing an item you can quote several different methods and corresponding rates to ship an item. The first one you enter is the one that will pop up when someone is searching for an item, and the other ones don't show up unless they click on your listing directly. So enter the lower priced, slower shipping option first to reflect the lower price and draw more people to look at your listing.

Hope this wasn't a waste of your time, and it helps a bit.

colinandcaitlinsmommy, wow thanks. VERY helpful. Will trawl my way through now

Final question for now. Do I have to attach a bank account to my selling account or can I just use paypal?

OP posts:
Skribble · 23/07/2006 01:26

Thanks colinandcaitlinsmommy for explaining what I mean .

As for keyword spamming, I supose that is not a good suggestion but its not exactly what I meant. More like using the most popular word for things like hoover and birkenstock. Not in a way to deceive or just throwing words in. The ref to Boden was more of a piss take sorry.

Skribble · 23/07/2006 01:30

I wouldn't link straight to bank account use paypal, it can help to accept postal orders and cheques too, but only post items once cheque has cleared.

As for pricing most auctions seem to start at 99p and bidders wil take it as high as they want. Pain if you only get 1 bid though I had to post off a hand made pram quilt for 99p . You can set a reserve for higher priced items.

FuglyDucking · 23/07/2006 01:41

ok stupid question here, but what is a postal order and wtf do you do with it?

OP posts:
Skribble · 23/07/2006 01:52

They go to the PO and buy a postal order and get yout name on it, you go to bank and put it in your account no charge to you.

colinandcaitlinsmommy · 23/07/2006 01:53

They're called money orders here, but hopefully this answers your question

FuglyDucking · 23/07/2006 02:01

Thanks

I took the plunge. Is this ok?

The listing is great. Would definitely add a picture, though.

The only other thing I would say is for the majority of items most of the activity takes place in the last hour of bidding. I've found for what I sell (admittedly the majority is not clothing, though) the timing of when the auction closes is very important to what price I get for the item. Next time I would choose an ending time when more people are likely to be on the computer bidding.

all4girlz · 23/07/2006 02:46

agree need a pic people like to see the item
you can also schedule it for a fee of 6p starts when you want it then

The selling I do -only get on the pc late so schedule them for a normal time lol.#
good luck mysize but my legs arent that long I wish!

lexiemum · 23/07/2006 06:22

LTS stuff goes well BTW - forever being outbid.

got any LTS tops to go on?

to add - finish stuff on a sunday evening or weekday evenings unless its child related then finsih during the day but avoid school pick up times.

serenity · 23/07/2006 10:02

If they were a size larger I'd buy them

Jeans that fit

FuglyDucking · 23/07/2006 11:26

Only jeans i'm afraid and only in that size. Have {@ least one more pair of LTS. Similar cut and with embroidery
