Lakeland do a wheelie bin cleaner or deodoriser (can't remember which I'm afraid) -I had to buy some for my MIL as they don't ahve a Lakeland near them (and we don't have wheelie bins!)

FrayedKnot · 21/07/2006 20:07

How do you rinse it out etc?

Note we have hosepipe ban.

Ours was already pretty filthy when we inheirited from previous occupants and a year on now has brick dust and old banana skin slurry in teh bottom.

Used four kettle of water, and a garden broom, then took it to the side of the pavement and tipped it .

biglips · 21/07/2006 21:24

DIY or garden centres I should think

cece · 21/07/2006 22:36

got the fluid in Tesco and the powder from a local ironmongers type shop

dazzlincaz · 21/07/2006 23:21

If it's grotty (maggots etc!) try the boiling water first. When you have rinsed the stuff out by tipping the bin on it's side, tackle it with your mop and whatever disinfectant you use on the kitchen floor, or dettol, or milton if you are using a steriliser (when you are due to change the solution, use it to clean the bin instead of pouring it down the sink). Using bin liners in your household bins keeps rubbish contained better, but something always pokes a hole and leaks any liquid out, doesn't it! If you don't like the idea of using the same mop for the kitchen floor and the bin, pick up a cheap one to keep just for the wheelie bin purpose, maybe?

there's a wheeliebin cleaning firm operating in my area. they hose and clean it all out every other week and i pay £14 for 3 months - money well spent!

eidsvold · 22/07/2006 00:12

use seomthing called phenalyne (sp?) works but have seen companies that do it as others have suggested.

handlemecarefully · 22/07/2006 00:15

pay the council to do it for me during the summer which I know is terribly lazy of me but never mind !

expatinscotland · 22/07/2006 16:15

throw some soda crystals in it.

dazzlincaz · 22/07/2006 22:33

Or essential oils! Tea tree would be good. Go easy tho' because you only need a few drops.

southeastastra · 22/07/2006 22:35

essential oils in a wheelie bin! the world's gone mad !!

ooohblush · 22/07/2006 22:37

Dettol, and lots of it.

dazzlincaz · 22/07/2006 23:18

Just sympathising with the biglips' dilemma of pongy maggoty fish odours in this heat - you poor thing! Hope you just read the suggestions posted to your dh and got HIM to sort the stink! Not funny when you have the windows open and it wafts indoors- ughhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
