and

1)Check whether the doors to your holiday accomodation can be locked with removable keys

2)whether windows (especially bedroom windows) can be locked- again preferably with removable keys

3)(not so important) but does it have an enclosed outdoor space- if it has a lockable outdoor space with fencing too high to climb over it gets 5 stars

  1. If it has a pool, then what sorts of things are in place to prevent access to the pool (lockable doors with removeable keys in the accomodation would be enough)

Thank you. Lots of families can't go on holiday because they don't know whether the accomodation will be safe for them when they arrive. I was thinking of putting together a bit of a database as a starting point.

The NAS won't do that, but I'm in the process of setting up a company that might.

Something that stops a door handle being turned might work, but there are lots of different types of door handle.

I think the fear with locks etc is mainly a problem for the severe end of the spectrum.

I still think we should get a bloody campervan.....

I've added bits and pieces from this thread to the site. Ask as many people as possible - maybe on other forums also for recommendations and we can add them. Maybe it would be worth emailing a standard questionnaire to a few companies or owners direct in different areas of the country and if their accommodation is suitable we can add it to the site and build up a really good database of properties!

Post any details on this thread and I can copy and paste it with links and pics to the website.

As extra peace of mind, these are brilliant. They are just stick ons and make a really loud alarm if a door/window is opened. I know it doesn't actually stop it being opened but it's a good warning system!

Thanks bubblerock you are a star!

My friend uses those now, she said they're good.

Try all the Tourist Boards - they could let you have a list of accomodation. Could you send them all a questionnaire telling them that you'd be prepared to list them on your site if they met your criteria?

I have to agree that it would be useful. We've spent holidays in cottages that were deathtraps for kids - one had an open tread staircase with NO HAND RAIL at one end of the living room and the main heating was a log burner in a huge fire-place at the other end with no fire guard! We just about managed by putting furniture across doors etc etc but not ideal. Good luck.

Don't know if you've considered/rejected - but i seem to remember Centerparks met the lockable doors/windows criteria but not the enclosed garden area - altho obv does have a pool - but if loud noise is an issue, that presumably wouldn't work either?

Jimjams2 · 25/07/2006 11:46

The problem with approaching owners is that often they become - um - well - full - if you start asking too many questions about ther suitability for autistic kids

I have thought about centerparks. Would prob be ideal for some, but I think too busy for us.

Jimjams - well I would say if they were not willing to accept autistic children then you wouldn't want them on the website! I can honestly say we have never had any problems with any of the adults with learning disabilities that come here or any children with autism or other special needs!

Going to a hoiday park in Dorset next week (Honeymoon on hold until we can leave DS for a bit longer than the weekend!!) was v expensive, couldn;t believe it could have got all inclusove somewhere on the med for less but will make sure I check everything you have asked and report back!!!

Jimjams2 · 25/07/2006 12:14

oh I know bubblerock, but some are funny - we've had problems with things like insurance etc before, so I'm always a bit nervous about mentioning it

Crikey - do insurance companies ask for details like that!?! You would be welcome here anytime - unfortunately we're selling so this is our last season and we won't be around in the spring - not much use to you!

Come on peeps - lets get some more reviews on the website!!!
