Prob best to invite her & other friends round, nibbles, drinks (non alcoholic for your mate). Do you have an idea of what she wants/needs? Perhaps she could do a "wish list" at reasonable costs and everyone choose something to bring her. Make sure someone brings something for her too as a pampering. Then maybe chick flicks?
Not too much help I'm afraid - I didn't have a baby shower

saw one where they had a 'clothes line' in a big basket and all the presents for the baby were pegged to the clothesline instead of being wrapped up and the mumtobe had to pull the line out of the basket...oh and then you could turn the basket into a - ahem - "wanky basket"

You could get someone out to do a pampering session like Iklboo suggested.
My SIL had a lady out from a company called Temple Spa. She didn't do any facials or anything like that but you got to try all the products.

Decide on a date/time & don't tell her, let it be a surprise, but obviously keep her OH in the loop.

Ask all guests to bring a balloon, a plate of food & anything they want to drink....if you are surprising her she won't have things in!

Have all close friends club together for a big something that she really wants & the rest bring a token gift, things she may not of thought of...photo frames, cuddly bear, toys etc.

All arrive at a meeting point so you can give her a big surprise together.

Then eat, drink & be merry!

At mine everyone wrote down suggestions for what I should call the baby and put them in a cup. I then had to read them out. Fairly hilarious if you let young children play

tassis · 21/07/2006 20:06

games we've done include:

guess the mum to be's "girth" using loo roll

a pictionary type game where baby objects either hve to be drawn, made out of playdoh or ripped out of paper

guess the baby food (blindfolded)

3 volunteers (including mum to be) to race to empty a baby bottle of apple juice (could do milk, but the thought makes me shudder!!)

decorate baby bibs or vests with fabric pens

Ooooh, I love baby showers! I have hosted a couple of them in my time.

I held them at my house and invited all my friends' female family members and friends. I decorated the house with washing lines of beautiful baby clothes (all from car boot sales actually, so very cheap), put up a few helium balloons in blue, white and pink, fed everybody with dainty sandwiches, tea in china cups and saucers and made tons home made cakes and scones with clotted cream. Also a bit of pink champagne.

It went down a storm! We just had a really lovely afternoon sitting around chatting about babies and generally getting very broody.

I did research a few games that are traditionally played at showers but mostly they weren't really what my friends would appreciate (guessing the mum to be's waist size etc).

All the guests brought a token gift which had to cost less than £5.

It wasn't a surprise party for them though, logistically impossible with my friends.

a few of the games we did at mine -
all the girls filled in a card with their guesses at the following details:
names, sex, weight, colour, mum's first words, place4 of conception or whatever takes your fancy - after the birth, I gave the girl who won (or was closest to) a bottle of champagne!

  • guess the baby food - I had to taste various jars of food and guess what they were -if nothing else, that put me off jars for life! -

and of course the perfect present

Here's a baby shower website I think the games ideas have to be 'bought' but there are also other ideas.
