not only have they been told they've got to wear trousers, and black ones at that, when I enquired as to whether the coaches had air conditioning I was told, No!! Can you imagine being trapped in a boiling hot coach for an hour wearing polo shirts and trousers!!! I am seriously considering keeping her off tomorrow, but she has been SO looking forward to it, I feel like a meany. What do you think?

Keeping her off is a bit extreme if she's looking forward to it. Get her a pair of cut-offs in thin fabric, a sunhat and a big bottle of water. And maybe one of those hand-held fan things.

That is ridiculous - won't they reconsider? Have you called the Headteacher direct? Suggest they wear their PE shorts or something if they want to keep the uniform.

Hey, I think I've got one of those fan things sonewhere - good idea! Half of her year have gone today, at least it's meant to be a bit cooler tomorrow.

What's the trip? Could you take her yourself at a different time? Or, could you get together with some other parents and break the uniform rule en mass? As far as I understand from other MN threads uniform in Primary schools is purely voluntary, so they can't actually enforce such a silly rule (not much help if your DD is in secondary though)

Our school allows shorts in the summer anyway, but since the heatwave they've also been allowed to wear their PE kit as an alternative. I actually think a cotton shirt is cooler than their artexes, but at least we've been given the choice.

It's to 'Bromley Field Studies Centre'. I think the reason they are making them wear trousers is that they'll be walking through long grass etc, looking for bugs and stuff, but surely they should be allowed to change into them once they get there rather than travel all day in them. She's Yr 1 BTW.

Can you drive her there, leave her with the group and drive her back, so she isn't missing out but doesn't suffer through the coach journey? Maybe offer to take her best friend in the car too?

Mind you, I always found the coach trip with everyone screeching and singing the fun part of those school trips.

Yeah, she has been seeing the coaches outside the school for a couple of weeks now, taking all the other years on their school trips and she cannot wait until it's her turn to get on one!!! She had been talking nonstop about it since Monday, so I think I would be a rotter not to let her go, but I am worried!! Ah well, I am sure we survived worse when we were young!!

How can they book a coach with no air conditioning though in this weather?!

Bomper · 19/07/2006 17:27

Just found out that today's half of the trip was cancelled as it was too hot!! If things don't improve tomorrow, I think dd will be disappointed any way!! Poor thing!
