Just looking at my shop list and noticed for the first time that items marked with * include VAT

like San pelligrino*
and Pure orange juice*

is it applicable to all liquid drinks?

VAT is applied to 'luxury' goods and not 'basics' so orange juice would but no oranges. Does some a bit weird as orange juice is hardly a luxury - I assume fruit squashs have VAT on them?

Bozza · 19/07/2006 11:21

Yes. I think the idea is that it is a luxury and tap water is good enough.

munz · 19/07/2006 11:27

yep it is, that's why choccy busicits have them on, as do head stones the actual grave is exempt but the head stone's a luxury apparently.

toilet roll* is a luxury?

or is that just soft toilet roll?

choc biscuits do do they?

yep iirr, the plain old rich tea/digestives are fine but the choccy ones are vatable - bloody cheek when it's only a thin layer as well! lol.

Okay ..... to continue the theme. Kids' clothes don't have VAT on them right, 'cos kids grow all the time blah blah blah ............ but what about when you have a (legally defined) CHILD who can no longer fit into designated kids' clothes or shoes and must wear VAT added adult ones instead ?

And they are still growing ......

This makes me spitting mad .... and must apply to 10s of 1000s of teenagers across the country. They are still CHILDREN even if they are wearing adult clothes.

Don't even get started on sanitary products as they have VAT on - since when have tampons/towels been a luxury? Yeah I know we could all use mooncups but that is besides the point isn't it.

I think there was a case a few years ago about Jaffa cakes - are they a biscuit or are they a cake? One has VAT on the other doesn't - I think it depended on cakes being soft and biscuits being hard - can't remember the result sorry

zippitippitoes · 19/07/2006 11:35

I wonder how they decide?

do jammy dodgers have vat?

do cream crackers? or bath olivers?

I agree about kids clothes particularly shoes it kicks in really early

and how come books are necessities? but paper is a luxury?

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 19/07/2006 11:35

surely cake is more luxurious than a biscuit?

OP posts:
Bozza · 19/07/2006 11:37

Are mooncups not VATable then?

munz · 19/07/2006 11:37

u know leading on from cats moother this morning on GMTV they're doing a car saftey week - it's a legal requyirement/safety to have a seat for your child but it's VATABLE (bloody cheek) so when posed wiht the question would u cut the VAT to encourage more plp to buy them the bloke said no we'll charge u £30. bloody cheek!

didn't realise sanity stuff has it on.

I didn't know any food had vat on unless you ate it inside a restaurant/cafe

Should have put in a disclaimer that my knowledge is well out of date and I have maternity leave blancmange brain at the moment!
