I haven't done this myself on floorboards, but I think the idea is that you use the thinned emulsion as a 'colourwash' for the boards (so, to make pine boards look less yellowy when varnished, you might whitewash them first) but you must then give them several coats of good varnish - the paint on its own is not enough. Seems like a good alternative to floor paint, if you want to be able to see the wood grain. I used emulsion followed by varnish on some bare wood kids' furniture, and it went on really easily and has worn well.

Yep, but was doing it as a temp. measure so didn't varnish. Looked good but got dirty quick - hence the varnish. Mind you, that was 3 years ago (v. temp that turned out to be!)

No, use floor paint! Farrow and Ball do all their colours in floor paint, it's very good

CD-do you know if you can use it on previously varnished/stained boards that are really scuffed? or do you have to sand first-cant face the sanding bit!

Tinker · 01/03/2004 15:38

miggy - I've painted my floorboards and they were really scuffed and previously had been painted. It looks great

CountessDracula · 01/03/2004 15:43

Don't think you have to sand. You can just put their aluminium primer on instead.

All the info incl colour chart is on their website, www.farrowandball.co.uk. You can call them and they will advise you

If you want a colurwash effect which is also hardwearing mix 3 large spoonfuls of white emulsion into 1 litre of varnish stir it really well and paint it on to clean boards it looks great.Or use floor paint emulsion will just chip and scratch
