Could you live without tv? And would you want to?

Schnapps's thread just got me a-thinkin'

Could you live without tv? I'm beginning to think that I could, quite easily - although I know full well I'll never actually get rid of the thing. And what's more, I like the idea of not having one.

This isn't a smug, hempy, lentil-weaving rant - I don't think tv is evil (although it's often shite) and I used to watch loads. It just occured to me that I almost never watch any these days. I don't have a soap I love, can't get into reality tv crapola, get my news/comedy/documentary stuff from the radio/newspapers/books/interweb most of the time anyway. The last thing I had to watch was Green Wing - the rest feels, well, irrelevant really.

Soooo...would ya? Could ya? Have ya?

I could but I wouldn't want to.

Watching TV after the kids are in bed and the chores are all done is gerally the only time of the day when I can turn my brain off - you really don't need it to process most of the crap on TV.

It's just nice to sit down and stare at the box for a couple of hours - no stress allowed!

Fio - the only reason I can write this now is because ds is downstairs glued to Cblastedbeebies for the requisite 'half-hour before dinner'!

We only really have it for the kids' Cbeebies. I like Cbeebies and what they get out of it, so I couldn't lose it just for that - at least not right now.

We tend to watch DVDs on the computer, but wouldn't really miss a TV at all at the moment, tbh.

Kelly1978 · 18/07/2006 16:57

nope, and no. I need the downtime, both for me and the kids. I don't watch it at all durign the day, but in the evening I need a bit of time to unwind and vegetate otherwise I would never sleep.

charliecat · 18/07/2006 17:01

I did when I was a teenager. I read books instead.
When I went round other peoples houses and they were all sitting glued to it not talking it was rather odd.
When we got it back we used to have family gatherings at 5ish to do countdown, loser make the coffee
Didnt miss it a bit.
Have pondered not having one, but like CSI and Wife Swap too much.

southeastastra · 18/07/2006 17:17

i could it's pants

beef · 18/07/2006 17:19

of course I could - its a not a life support system and NO I wouldn't want to!

sugarfree · 18/07/2006 17:24

Piece of cake.Absolute rubbish on there mostly, and it all seems to be those reality things that go on for weeks on end.
The only thing I watch at the moment is 'Tribe' on BBC2.
We didn't have one when we first lived together and the longer you go without, the less you miss it because you don't get to see all the 'Coming Soon' things.

TooTicky · 18/07/2006 17:28

Oh pleeeeease, somebody come and make the telly disappear!!!!! (This is not an invitation to burglars!)
I get fed up with it being on, with kids switching it on and wandering off, with the incessant NOISE and ADVERTS.
Must instigate some serious rules before I go insane

SoupDragon · 18/07/2006 17:56

Yes and no. I very rarely watch TV any more. I sometime have it on whilst bf-ing BabyDragon. The only think I watched regularly recently was Dr Who. I watch the occasional DVD though.

but it stops me from killing DSs and them from killing each other.

schnapps · 18/07/2006 18:16

I could live without tv, and did go without one for a couple of years at one point. Wouldn't want to never have the option to watch tv though, and dd wouldn't be happy without the option either.

jellyjelly · 18/07/2006 18:23

i didnt have a tv when x partner and i got together and it was great, nice to get to know someone without and i thought i knew alot about him because of it. Now i am thinking about getting rid to save money but now have a child to think of who enjoys the tv he watches which isnt alot but is educational to him.

iota · 18/07/2006 18:24

I could, I doubt if dh and the 2 boys could though

expatinscotland · 18/07/2006 18:44

yeah. i did. i went w/o one for a couple of years.

now, tho, the answer would be no.

NannyL · 18/07/2006 18:46

yes, when we first lived together we didn't. But we did have a bath. I don't think I could live without a TV and a bath - you need one or the other for mindless relaxing!

With the children though it would be possible but just not worth it!

franke · 18/07/2006 19:06

I've lived in Germany for over 2 years and just last week I finally got British TV. Luxury! It's rubbish, you may say, but at least it's rubbish I understand. And actually after the dubbed American dross and pseudo Val Doonican 'big night out' I've been subjected to for the last 2 years, it's quality. And cbeebies - well I've never known my 2 so quiet for so long. So no, I couldn't live without it right now, it's too much of a novelty and a lifeline.

i went to germany in the 80s and really loved watching dubbed 'dallas'

lou33 · 18/07/2006 19:27

i cant remember the last time i watched tv

dont think it was this year

charliecat · 19/07/2006 08:15

Floatingonthemed, I remember not having a CLUE what people were talking about...but the glued too motionless vision was more disturbing to me...however, I have asked dd whos 8 if she wants to watch neigbours, eastenders, big brother, corrie as all her friends are talking about it at school and the tellys never on so she will be clueless as to what the are on about.
We watched an embarrasing 1 minute of neighbours before switching off, it was so so rubbish we couldnt watch it.

Yes, I could live without it, but I don't think DH could. We didn't have a tv for years and only got one really to watch DVDs and the F1 (when we have people round) - I far prefer to do something constructive (or MN!) than sit in front of the box in the evening, but I know it will be good for DS to watch Cbeebies a bit in due course (heavily monitored!). Couldn't live without my Mac and the internet though
