How often do you change the water in your paddling pool?

Ours has been filled up for two days and has gone a bit cloudy. How often should I change it, or is there anything I can add to the water to make it last longer? And if I do add anything, does that mean I can't use the water to water the garden?

TIA

Depends how grubby it gets. Probably twice a week, and just pour the water out onto the garden. The amount is so small it doesn't seem worth using chemicals to clean it. I imagine it's possible, that's what swimming pools do after all.

Though after my two have been at the pool, there's often not enough water left in it anyway, and everthing else is soaked!

buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 16:06

i empty ours after each time they finish palying in it.i know its probably a waste of water, but it looks so mucky and horrible with bits floating in it,so i put clean in every day.

PrettyCandles · 18/07/2006 16:07

Give them a sieve to play with and they'll strain out most of the bits for you.

tenalady · 18/07/2006 16:08

buffy, Cant you get a childs fishing net and get the worst out. Our local swimming pool is dirtier than your paddling pool I bet. Mines been there a week but we have been using it to water flowers so I will top it up soon.

buffythenappyslayer · 18/07/2006 16:10

ours is only small anyway and like prettycandles, theres never taht much left after theyve finished splashing, but what is left if its mucky, gets tipped on the flowers.

KTeePee · 18/07/2006 16:18

Always empty mine at the end of the day, or when ever they are finished playing - but I still have a toddler and would be worried he would have an accident - too many stories in the news every year about children drowning in them....

Blandmum · 18/07/2006 16:20

Wow, change the water. My two splash so much it is gone in about 30 minutes

mummydear · 18/07/2006 17:02

Change ours everyday , if theres any left !!. Its then used to water the garden.

Its only a small paddling pool this year due to the water restrictions.

ComeOVeneer · 18/07/2006 17:04

I change mine daily (it is the only chance I have of keeping mine lawn alive, plus ds generally wees in it most days)

ComeOVeneer · 18/07/2006 17:05

Mind you I only put a couple of inches or so in it.

Reece · 18/07/2006 17:22

Normally change every day and tip water onto garden. Changed it today after not doing so for 3 days! The bottom was all slimey and yuk. Going to go back to doing it everyday.
There's no water/hose ban here but I suppose if there was it would be more tricky.

CADS · 18/07/2006 17:27

We had the same problem. Day 3 today, the water stinks and bottom is all slimey.

We DO have a hosepipe restriction here so if anyone has any suggestions on how to keep the water clean, please post them.

There's only so many times I can water the garden without the neighbours calling in MI5.

nikkie · 18/07/2006 19:49

I use mine to water the plants and change it every time

canadianmum · 18/07/2006 20:01

We have hosepipe restriction here too, but you are actually allowed to fill a paddling pool with a hose. Of course, DH went out and bought the most enormous paddling pool last year so I only change the water every few days out of extreme guilt, and I don't fill it too much.

Do you think plants like essence of preschooler in their water? Maybe it helps them grow....

tassis · 18/07/2006 20:10

Gosh, it never crossed my mind to keep the water in for a second day.

Mind you i'ts not very big and there's no hosepipe ban in Scotland.

flashingnose · 18/07/2006 20:46

We've got this one which even though it's only 1/3 full is still too much water to change every day.

Any more suggestions?

DD only has a little paddling pool but I empty it at the end of every day - use the water to water the grass

poisson · 18/07/2006 21:15

you need chlorine tablets prob

jollyfolly · 18/07/2006 21:22

i think the accident prevention guidlines say you should empty it as soon as it is finished with to prevent the risk of drowning.... sorry that is the boring grown up answer! we empty ours every night as i am paranoid about what gets in the water when no one is looking + ds has eczema so i like to know the water is clean so he does not end up getting infected eczema.... but then i still sterilise his milk bottles so really i am neurotic about bugs!

Reece · 19/07/2006 15:09

Somebody Shoot Me!!!! I put the hose on to fill up the pool and then DS and I came in and made sandwiches and then I did a bot of Msntg. DS came running up to me saying look mummu look, the pool is full!!! We have spent the last half hour getting the water out to a safer level again. Ooops...
