The 'G' stand for goodness by the way.

I moved house a while ago and had sky tv straight away because not able to have terrestrial tv. Had problems for ages with blue screen saying no signal, technical fault with channel etc. Sky technician came round today to replace the box but told me that i will probably have long term problems with the signal because neighbours absolutely huge (tall) tree blocking the signal, he said that moving the sky dish won't work because anywhere it is put on the house, this blooming tree is still in the way. Very fed-up. What would you do? Please don't suggest a life without tv!!

poison the tree

CountessDracula · 18/07/2006 15:30

get cable

expatinscotland · 18/07/2006 15:30

learn to use the f word.

flutterbee · 18/07/2006 15:31

I second poisoning the tree

expatinscotland · 18/07/2006 15:32

Unfortunately, if you poison the tree and you get caught, you could actually get in some serious trouble.

schnapps · 18/07/2006 15:33

I would have had cable tv to begin with but it
isn't available in my area. I would poison the tree but it is sooo huge it would surely take an awful lot of poison. Thought about going round to neighbour to ask him to chop the tree, but it would abviously cost him for someone to do that, and I don't want to have to pay for it.

schnapps · 18/07/2006 15:33

Oh, ok, I'll stop thinking of ways to poison the tree

OP posts:
flutterbee · 18/07/2006 15:35

I can solve that expat..........don't get caught.

Enid · 18/07/2006 15:35

cant believe this is true tbh

we have THREE HUGE oak trees, two directly outside our house, one at the side and then a copse of trees on the other side and we have no problems getting sky

get an independent in and site your dish on the roof, not on the wall of your house

nailpolish · 18/07/2006 15:37

now my dad had this problem. his neighbour kindly agreed to have the tree 'trimmed' to half its height (and some off the side too)

its been 8 yrs (i think) and its only needed doing twice

he and his neighbour went halvers btw

or you could just get freeview

mytwopenceworth · 18/07/2006 15:38

ask them to cut down the tree/trim it a bit? or have cable instead?

and suggestions to cheer you up:-

go round in the dead of night and chop it down?

instruct sky to attach box to top of tree and run cable to your tv instead?

climb tree and adorn top with lots of metal in hope lightening will strike it?

ask neighbour if you can have your dish on their house cos their poxy f'ing tree means you cant have it on yours!!

reroute waterways to relocate colony of beavers to the area in the hope they will gnaw down the tree for their dams?

infect tree with deadly peruvian woodworm.

infect neighbour with deadly peruvian woodworm.

accept reality of a skytv free life and take up painting/basket weaving/knitting

get a big box and turn it into a tv then get family members to sit inside it and act out all your favourite sky tv programmes.

cupcakes · 18/07/2006 15:38

I don't believe the sky man. Anyhow, the tree was there first...

expatinscotland · 18/07/2006 15:40

It's easier to get caught than you think, flutter.

Besides, why make the tree pay for it w/its life?

Sorry, but I think that's cruel.

I like Enid's suggestion.

Also, I think the tech's just a lazy git feeding you a cock and bull story.

We got Sky reception via a roof dish in an extremely urban area surrounded by buildings.

nailpolish · 18/07/2006 15:41

what is wrong with freeview?

or talking to your neighbour?

schnapps · 18/07/2006 16:05

Well, think I will mention it to neighbour and see what he says, not sure if it's a bit cheeky asking him to chop someof it off since it's not causing him any problems. I've not lived here long so don't 'know' him.
I've heard about freeview, but don't know much about it. I take it you dont need a dish or underground cable then? How does it work?
Thanks for all the repies by the way

freeview - one off payment for a box, then everything is free from then on in

There is nothing on TV anyway! You can live without it and life is sooo much better, espcially with the internet (think how much more time you would have for Mumsnet!!!)

anthonykiedisbitontheside · 18/07/2006 16:42

My friend had this problem and sky suggested she ask her neighbour if he'd mind putting the dish on his house instead and wiring yours up from there. Could this be an option?

GeorginaA · 18/07/2006 16:48

Definitely try an independant - Sky engineers will only put dishes up to a certain height. It'll serve as a second opinion before you throw any more money at the problem.

Alternatively, see if you can get a refund from Sky (after all, it must be their fault that they sited it without checking you could receive a signal properly in the first place) then use the money to get cable instead.

schnapps · 18/07/2006 17:30

Do you just plug the freeview box into an eclectric plug socket and that's it? How does it receive a signal without a dish or underground cable? (yes, I might just be dim!)
FioFio and cazzybabs do you really not have any tv at all? are all of your family happy about that?

I like trees. I don't like Sky.

schnapps · 18/07/2006 17:44

By cable do you mean like ntl? Because it isn't available in my area - or is there another alternative?

FioFio - so in other words it's a case of 'do what I say, not what I do' - crikey, you're like my mother
