Im probably getting it mixed up with other war torn countries Is it like the adverts you see on the telly? skinny little children covered in flys? I dont think I could cope with that!

not war torn but very poor. it's a few years since i was there and i was in rural area, in winter, very grim, colder inside the houses than outside, no running water etc. Bucharest is meant to be better though still some dire areas. No skinny little children as such but Bucharest does boast street children who live underground, in the sewers from memory. I think you'd be unlikely to witness this though - prob just be beggars...
They are trying to open up to tourists though so depends where you're headed. Carpathians mountains meant to be a tourist destination...? sorry don't have up to date info but you could try website
www.tripadvisor.com
or
lonley planet website - think there's a section called the thorn tree which might help.

Don't want to be down on the country though - it is a while since i was there and depends where and why you're going - prob be interesting if not luxurious!

War torn??? Where on earth are you thinking of?? Not Romania! I lived there for almost 4 years and went back last year. Bucharest is still a bit of a dump but Transylvania is lovely and much more prosperous. No skinny little children, apart from the beggars in Bucharest (most of this is organised begging with women paying someone so that they can take a baby begging with them and get more money). If you stick to the centre of Bucharest, you're unlikely to see the dire (predominantly gypsy) areas.

The coast is nice, we used to go to Mamaia, which is now getting horribly expensive and full of German tourists.

Have a look at www.inyourpocket.com

Thanks

I wonder where I was thinking of then? somewhere that sounds like it probably knowing me!

I am a typical worrier though and have alsorts of thoughts in my head from being kidnapped to catching some rare and incurable disease, we usually go to Haven Camps

Maybe you were thinking of the Romanian orphanages featured on Blue Peter (in my childhood). My cleaner is romanian and says there are many lovely places to go.

LadyTamba · 15/07/2006 23:45

I dont think I will actually get to see much of the tourist type places, its a job that was mentioned to me but its in all different places, taking me away for 3 days a week or so. Austria, Romania, Belguim, Holland, Germany etc, different places every time. Am tempted but its alot of commitment and I have young children

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 16/07/2006 07:10

sounds fascinating what is the job?

zippitippitoes · 17/07/2006 11:09

have you thought any more about it?

LadyTamba · 17/07/2006 11:20

It would be travelling with a driver to european countries and doing admin work for the company at their bases over there. I dont speak any other languages though... so not sure how that would work!

I would be away 3 days a week, different days a week on a 'can do' basis, so when im free i can work and when im not i dont have to iyswim.

Money is good, about 400 pound a trip

Am not sure though, my kids are very little and im worried about being so far away from home.

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 17/07/2006 11:26

a lorry driver?

It sounds quite demanding, do you enjoy travel?

How would it fit in with dh's shifts?

Would you end up reliant on your mil?

presumably all your expenses would be paid, it depends how much work you got 3 days a month might be doable

LadyTamba · 17/07/2006 11:30

The ferry and expensese all go to the company, so I wouldnt have to worry about that.

Yup, would be a lorry driver, with bunk beds in the back - he would be male though, not sure how I feel about that tbh. Spending 3 days with a bloke i dont know, and it being a different bloke each time so you dont build up trust iyswim.

Dh works 4 on 4 off so it would fit easily around his shifts.

Id get to see some of the world, I havent really travelled much and i think most of the time id be sat in a lorry so not really seeing much of the touristy places.

The money is tempting, but im not sure.

Have you been in a lorry cab? It's quite an intimate environment and sleeping too..that would be a nono for me

I've slept in yachts with strange men before in the saloon beds with one and it was ok as he was a nice young man, but one on one would be very different..what would you talk about?

LadyTamba · 17/07/2006 11:35

Nope, never been in a lorry. Its the small enclosed space that im worried about, and like you say, what would we talk about! And bunk beds omg! Its a little close for comfort i think.

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 17/07/2006 11:45

I've been in one..in my hitching a lift days, quite good fun ..you feel like a king of the road but I think being driven in one across europe would be a big ask and the sleeping area is cramped in all directions and no privacy..what about hygiene..

Carmenere · 17/07/2006 11:48

An enclosed space for extended periods of time WITH A HAIRY HANDED TRUCKER???????Are you MAD???
Seriously though, I wouldn't fancy it at all. I cant see why they cant fly you there and put you up in a hotel. It would save valuable time spent driving, it actually sounds very odd to me, sorry.

LiliLaTigresse · 17/07/2006 11:55

But surely in the company of a hairy arsed trucker you would talk about MN???
I wouldn't do it tbh....

zippitippitoes · 17/07/2006 11:55

I actually thought it would be easier for them to employ someone locally..do you have connections with this company that they have picked you?

geekgrrl · 17/07/2006 12:02

is it £400 for 3 days, in effect 24 hours considering the incovenient sleeping arrangement (which would put me right off) etc? Doesn't seem good money to me tbh. It's £5.55 an hour. McD's pays more.

geekgrrl · 17/07/2006 12:03

72 hours I mean, not 24.

zippitippitoes · 17/07/2006 12:05

"bunk beds" is quite a generous description too

why not get a regular job?

LadyTamba · 17/07/2006 12:06

I think its because I need to be with the driver, through various stages. I know the manager of the company well so I trust him that its not something dodgy. They have an account set up with the ferry company for their drivers etc

I was wondering about hygiene and stuff!

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 17/07/2006 12:09

I think recipe for disaster comes to mind...can't they find you a job in the uk office?

and you would get fat

LadyTamba · 17/07/2006 12:09

I wasnt actually looking for a job, a space came up and they asked me if I was intrested iyswim.

Maybe if they had female drivers I would be more enthusiastic about it

They have said I can go on a run without committing to the job to see if I like it. It would be to Austria, which is a 3 day job.

OP posts:
geekgrrl · 17/07/2006 12:09

urgh, am just imagining myself listening to the trucker farting all night in the bottom bunk...[shudder]
Surely there must be better stuff out there?

LadyTamba · 17/07/2006 12:10

Oh No, I hadnt thought about the getting fat bit. Seriously - that puts me off more than all the rest! Eating crap food, sitting doing nothing for days, No bath! I am girl!!! I cant go without basic hygiene stuff.
