Am still paranoid about H.V's call and it's a constant niggle now.

Actually after reading that thread on A+E (how many times have you been) i think maybe i am too paranoid.
Anyway, as i posted a few weeks ago i took dd after a bump to the head (she's 15 months old) . I then got a phonecall from the H.V i've never met about it. She questioned me. After posting on here i was reassured that it is routine if the child has been more than once in a space of time . DD had been bacause of rash too.
Now though i am terrified of her having any kind of accident thinking that if i have to take her again they'll start thinking i'm mad or neurotic or worse

I am pregnant and prone to 'worse case scenario' thoughts lately but this is a real concern of mine now as i seem to have exceeded my limit with trips to A+E and dd is SUCH a daredevil she worried me. Whenever she's doing somethign now i think NO, she can't go to A+E again.

So although i suppose this system MAY help a child who needs it (though i'm v. cynical) is it not quite counterproductive?

my dd was 16 months when she fell off of her little car and put her teeth thru her top lip. It got stuck between her 2 front teeth bless her and we had to take her to a and e for the 1st and only time. I had a call from the HV just to check she was ok.,so this is just standard practice to protect those who don't have lovely mummys like us!

LaylaandSethsmum · 13/07/2006 21:57

As you've said this is routine, we took DD to A+E when she was 2 and fell out of a shopping trolley onto a concrete floor and the HV contacted us about it. All GPs are contacted when a child attends A+E for whatever reason.
You haven't exceeded your trips to A+E, believe me there will be kids who are there every week with something or other.

The system is in place to try to pick up possible non accidental injury and in order for it to work it has to be applied to everyone.

Don't worry about it, kids get into scrapes and your HV will appreciate this. She just has to cover her back.

it is normal procedure..whenever my dd has been in hospital and to a+e an automatic report is sent to gps and flagged with hv. IT is a way to try and stop kids slipping through the net although my hv has never phoned to follow up I would be happy if she did as it would mean they are doing a thorough job.

meant to add at the grand age of 7mths my dd has been to a+e about 7 times already for a mixture of things.

Angeliz · 13/07/2006 22:05

Thanks all.
Everyone on here told me it was normal procedure at the time. I'm o.k with that now but i do think it's made me much more paranoid about using A+E in the future.

my ds is 17 months and has been twice since christmas but i've never had a phone call from HV. I feel all left out now, they don't care
actually, it could be because I never answer the phone

spinamum · 13/07/2006 22:54

i'm due ANOTHER call from HV. 2nd in two weeks. both head injuries. they are doing their job but i did have a level of relief that this accident happened at nursery rather than at home again. (I'm sure one's mum should never be relieved about location of head splitting!) I'm always slightly worried that my laid back attitude could come across as not caring enough. I have an energetic three yr old who likes jumping off things and gets stuck into things(despite being diddy) with the expected bumps and glued heads! He had two ambulances called out within four weeks of one another when he was 9 and 10 months.(leaped off bed i'd placed him on for a second and tumbled backwards in high chair by flicking his legs against table) I just hope HV and everyone else looking out for my son realise how much i cry ever time he hurts himself and how i pull myself together so as i'm "useful" when it comes to getting him fixed.

I deal with child protection and non-accidental injury regularly in my profession.

I also am a regular at A and E!! ds is a nightmare!

You have to bear in mind that there are very many regularly occuring childhood injuries through genuine accidents-and the cause of the injury is obvious for all to see.

Peolpe start to worry if there is NO explanation for an injury (particularly with a non-verbal younger child) or the explanation does not accord with the mechanism of injury

try not to get paranoid. Some children have lots of accidents and most drs and health visitors are aware of this.
