mummysurfer - if you're using Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options, then at the top of the General tab you can specify your homepage. Just type in the google address there and click OK.

Sorry, meant to add that the reason your homepage is getting automatically replaced with something else is probably because a script on another site you've visited has automatically reset your homepage. Usually sites ask you first before they do this though. Very anti-social IMO!

I don't think this is the case SM. As we don't visit the site it keeps being replaced with. IFKWIM.
We know how to get it back to google it's just we want to try and stop them changing it in the first place. There must be a solution as can't you block your children from visiting certain sites.

Mummysurfer, without using 3rd party software like NetNanny, I think you can use Internet Explorer's Security settings to only allow access to "Trusted Sites". I've never used this tbh because I find overly restrictive security settings a pain in the bum, but it is one way to block certain sites by the looks of it. However, it does sound like a script or some intrusive bit of software is resetting your homepage for you. You might be able to get round this by uninstalling then reinstalling Internet Explorer. Don't know what else to suggest offhand, but at least this will bump the post up for nighttime mumsnetters to see

I would say this is a virus. we had something similar from some dodgy site and we had to reinstall

Can you get to google at all? If not, you may have something I had, which I (helpfully) can't remember how to fix - there's a list of instructions that websites can write to if you visit them, and there is something around that will automatically direct you away from google.

Does anyone else know what I mean? I don't think I do. If you're still stuck, I'll ask dh if he can remember what it was.

I've got a similar thing on my work pc, where I get some kind of Explore the Net cr*p that keeps popping up instead of my favourites. When I close it down it shuts my browser down too. Haven't a clue what causes it but when my lovely IT people get round to fixing it I'll ask them how they did it.
I think its something thats embedded itself in the dos code script thing that opens up the browser, so it sounds as if yours might be something similar. And I certainly didn't ask for it to be there either.

Your computer has been infected with some 'malware' or 'adware'. Search for this program 'AdAware 6', by Lavasoft. Download, install and run it; it will find the programs doing this on your computer and remove them.
