How to get to Carling Hammersmith Apollo by public transport?

DD and I are going to the Wiggles today, and I have spent a ludicrous amount of time staring at bus/tube maps and checking the Transport for London journey planner section. Then it dawned on me that I should ask you lot:

We're coming from central London/Victoria station area - what's the best route? How far is the walk from the Hammersmith tube to the venue? Is there a safe way to do it with a child - know the roads are extremely busy around there. What about a bus? Looks like the 211 might work for us, but no idea if the stops are close to the venue or far away. Generally, how long should we allow for the journey? Any other good routes/suggestions would be appreciated.

Oh, and finally - is there a painless public transport way to get from Hammersmith to Holland Park? Everything that I can map out via tube/bus involves at least 2 and possibly 3 changes. Anyone have a bright idea? A friend has asked us to come to late lunch and I'm pretty close to saying that it's going to be such a nightmare to get there, that we should do it another time - unless one of you has a good solution for me.

I'm usually pretty good at getting around on public transport, but Hammersmith is not an area I know at all. This is one of those times when I wish I had the disposable income to simply put my hand up and yell "taxi"!

the walk from hammersmith tube to the apollo is no very far, there will be lots of you so the tube would probably be the best bet. i'd rather travel by tube, even with the changes as the bus can sometimes get crowded. hammersmith is quite close to holland park as well. what time does the 'gig' start! say hello to dorothy the dinosaur for me

Thanks for reply. Show starts at 11am - first time I've ever been to Hammersmith for a concert in the morning!

ha that's really early! rock n roll!

i would do the tube there will be tons of mums and kids all making the same way to the apollo, where are you coming from?

Hope you enjoy it -- we saw them at Oxford on Monday and they were very good (don't ask about live-in-London-go-to-Oxford thing ... it's a long story). Agree the tube is the way to go, then follow the hordes of small children. There are lots of subways and nice clear road crossings, and it isn't far at all.

Do you mean Holland Park the area or Holland Park the place? If you mean the park, get a bus from Hammersmith Road (which becomes High Street Kensington). There is an entrance to Holland Park next to the Commonwealth Institute.

Oooh have fun. We saw them on Sunday and had a great time. We went al the way to Bristol from the South East. The things we do for our children....

earlybird will be singing 'fruit salad-yummy yummy' now!

Beatie · 13/07/2006 13:05

It will all be over now and all the songs swirling around her head for the rest of the day

Thanks for all the tips. We took the tube to the show, which was very easy. Had a bit of trouble getting to Holland Park (the area, not the park), and after wandering/sweating for about 30 minutes (dd in her Dorothy the Dinosaur tail ), finally gave up and got a minicab for the princely sum of £6.

The show was alot of fun, even though it started half an hour late. They kept hundreds of us waiting in the sweltering lobby, and there were lots of teary/impatient kids and just as many edgy mums. I finally asked an official looking chap with a clipboard the reason for the delay, and he said the lighting rig men arrived late! But all was soon forgiven/forgotten when the Wiggles hit the stage. DD's new favourite song is "Lights, Camera, Action" - she's been singing it all day!

Glad your dd enjoyed the show Earlybird.

Half an hour is a long time to keep little ones waiting. I can imagine the tears and tantrums!

Earlybird · 14/07/2006 07:34

Thanks Beatie. Yes, it was a long time to wait. I think to avoid overcrowding, at a point they closed the front doors so no one else could come in. It worked, except with all doors closed there was no air circulation so the lobby rapidly became a very hot, stuffy place. The back of my t-shirt was soaking wet - and that's unusual for me. There were hundreds (maybe thousands as the capacity is aover 2000 I think?) of us inside. People were sitting all over the stairs/floor - especially those families with more than one child. Not good.

But, all was soon forgotten when we saw the show. DD has watched her dvd several times since yesterday!

Seeing the Wiggles show last Sunday has meant a revival of Wiggles DVDs all week
