Dilemma - if you borrowed a book from the library for your dd and it was new and had a page of stickers at the back, would you let her take them?

Charlie and Lola book for dd2 (3) has a tempting new sheet of stickers at the back.

What would You do?

hairymclary · 12/07/2006 18:25

no, i wouldn't take them

charliecat · 12/07/2006 18:25

well someone must take them as that sort of thing is never there by the time we get it out the library

pepperpots · 12/07/2006 18:25

If she doesn't then i'm sure the next child that has it will

foxinsocks · 12/07/2006 18:26

no

but I would probably point it out to library person and hopefully, they would let you have them anyway

Norah · 12/07/2006 18:26

Hmmm - inteteresting question ! Surprised library didn't remove them !

I think I would let my dd - because if she didn't someone else would ! Also using the stickers won't diminish other's enjoynment of the book - so no harm done !

Is it possible to remove whole page of stickers so no-one will even know it was there ?

hairymclary · 12/07/2006 18:28

yes, I agree with foxinsocks. otherwise you're teaching her that you can just take things without asking

naswm · 12/07/2006 18:29

I agree with foxinsocks too

southeastastra · 12/07/2006 19:32

me three

Enid · 12/07/2006 19:37

aha

well I asked dd2 what we should do

she suggested that she took one sticker and left the rest for the other children

which we have done

No
Don't get the argument "if she didn't, someone else would" - it's still wrong!
How do they know what's right and wrong if parents sanction theft?

SoupDragon · 12/07/2006 19:38

No.

Rowlers · 12/07/2006 19:38

I could live with that.
Have I just contradicted myself?

pedilia · 12/07/2006 19:40

No I wouldn't, sending totally the wrong message. I would point it out to the libary on return

katzg · 12/07/2006 19:40

i like the way you played it - one sticker for her and then one for the next child, like that, has made me smile, its just the sort of thing my DD1 would say.

WelshBoris · 12/07/2006 19:41

No it's theft

hairymclary · 12/07/2006 19:41

that's sweet. sadly the next kid probably will take the whole lot.
I'd definitely mention it to the librarian when you take it back, she may say you can keep all of them

Norah · 12/07/2006 19:43

Very sweet and very nice - but sadly the next child to have the book will snaffle the lot ! Not everyone is so moral as mumsnetters - most would just nick the lot !

EvesMama · 12/07/2006 19:48

i would have said she could use some of them and leave some for other children..they must know they are in it, its not that bad for a child to stick a few stickers into a sticker book even if it is in library.

we had same thing a christmas, docs had new christmas book with stickers for each page..we did a couple and agreed to leav rest for other children

nannyme · 13/07/2006 00:52

Don't see it as theft myself as the stickers are kind of redundant if they are not stuck somewhere so this could consitute a waste of paper, ink and gum.

Therefore the one sticker per loanee would be the best policy until they run out.

If the enjoyment of the book would be diminished by their removal then that is different.

I think I have just argued that it's okay to steal if someone isn't making use of said item. "Oh hello, I am just going to steal your car since you have broken your leg and it is thus redundant"

I don't know in that case.

Noone having the stickers sounds a bit booooring to me but could be morally sound.

olivia35 · 13/07/2006 02:24

What's wrong with :

'Oooh stickers! But because this is a LIBRARY book, you can do one, then leave the rest for other children'

Then mention to library on return.

warthog · 13/07/2006 03:23

no

Enid · 13/07/2006 15:43

they gave dd2 ALL the stickers

trinityrhino · 13/07/2006 15:50

awwww so cute and that was very good in teaching her that doing the right thing sometimes gets rewarded

southeastastra · 13/07/2006 16:26

that's fab!!

Marina · 13/07/2006 16:30

Of course they did Enid, librarians are all very kind
We see plenty worse than a sheet of overlooked stickers concealed in returned library items, trust me...
