Unfashionable Hobbies

I was talking to a mum this morning at school who's hobby is knitting and quilting, which I thought was so nice in a very old-fashioned way. Has anyone else got and old-fashioned hobby?

I don't do it now, but I can knit. Did loads for the first couple of kids, then recycled them for the last 2. Have also knitted jumpers for dh in the past. I never could get the hang of crocheting though.

Twinkie · 25/02/2004 12:12

Not old fashioned but DP is a TinTin enthusiast!! (Odd Man!!) he also buys pictures of cats - not like photos but proper art (and I hate cats )

I tired my hand at cross stitch and quilling but is all too fiddly for me and I prefer reading to anything else anyway.

I used to like doing jigsaws. Ahem. Obviously my evenings are now packed with social events (ie bath nights) so don't do them anymore

Kibby · 25/02/2004 12:23

Jigsaws, now I am impressed, I can't even do these twelve piece ones the children do. My spacial skills aren't what they might be, never were. Anyone ever been bowling, as in green grass bowling rather than ten-pin bowling. My friend and I were thinking recently of going along to a bingo night kind of for a laugh, anyone ever done that?

Someone started a thread a couple of weeks ago about Bingo. My Mum is Bingo Queen, and I've been with her a few times it is a good night out actually!

OO - did you have one of those huge wallet type things to transport your jigsaws in?

Personally I enjoy darning socks, lace making and cross stitch.

oliveoil · 25/02/2004 12:28

No, my dad made me a wooden board with sides so I could slot it under the settee.

bettys · 25/02/2004 12:29

I knit and have for years, but it has now become very trendy as the likes of Kate Moss, Gwyneth Paltrow & Geri Halliwell (seen knitting on the set of SATC) all do it.
There's even a group called Cast Off which goes around London's public places holding live knitting events;

I'm very sad indeed... love knitting (currently producing baby blankets!) love jigsaw puzzles - last one I did was a Buffy one... and absolutely love Bingo (am very proud of my Mecca bingo card membership)!!! No time to do much of the above now, and I don't suppose this'll change as baby no. 2 due in just over 4 weeks time, but give me a few years and I'll be bingoing with the best of them!

bundle · 25/02/2004 12:48

knitting? old fashioned? it's the new rock n roll

Janstar · 25/02/2004 12:51

I made a baby quilt for a friend last weekend. And I do cross-stitch. I make home made wine and sloe gin - this involves scavenging from hedgerows which I think is quite looked-down-upon. People look at you as if you must be too poor to buy blackberries - kind of sorry for you mixed with disdain.

My ds and dh go to the woods and gather firewood. And we go out for walks without any real purpose except the walk. We eat dinner at the table every evening and talk to each other, what's more, we eat real vegetables!!

We sound like the earth-family, don't you think?

anyone for rag-rug making?

Debbiethemum · 25/02/2004 13:27

Not rag rug, but I am making a latch-hook rug for bump, ds has one I did for him.

Otherwise I do knitting, cross stitch or jigsaws. My problem is that I cannot just watch TV, I need to keep my hands busy as well. This is all on hold at the moment as 7 months pregnant with a 2yr old already all I really want to do is veg

Actually I don't really have any fashionable hobbies - well except knitting now !!!

GRMUM · 25/02/2004 15:26

when I find the time knitting, cross stich and smocking.........which means never these days (sadly)

Tinker · 25/02/2004 15:50

Janstar - recipe for home made wine etc please?

Knitting is trendy, need to start again soon.

Love Scrabble since daughter got one for Christmas.

oliveoil · 25/02/2004 15:52

oooooh scrabble, I like that even though I panic when it's my turn and someone has hogged 'my' spot on the board.

I went to Toys R Us at the weekend to look for a pushalong thing for dd (still not walking grrr) and saw all the board games and can't wait until I can dig them all out of the loft - Buckaroo! Monopoly! The one with the Straws and Marbles!

oliveoil · 25/02/2004 15:53

Kerplunk! (remembered)

katzguk · 25/02/2004 16:00

i like scrapbooking which is quite old fashioned but making a come back, i have a big box of bits and pieces in and turn P's baby photos into stories.

Janstar · 25/02/2004 16:19

Tinker, you do need a few bits of equipment for the wine-making. But once you've invested in them, they can be used again and again and the cost of ingredients is very low.

You will need:

a plastic bucket with a lid
funnels
nylon mesh or cheesecloth bags
demijohns (plastic is easiest)
fermentation locks
screw caps for demijohns, plain and with holes for fermentation locks
sodium metabisulfate or Milton
bottles
corks
foil caps
labels
corking device

It sounds like a lot but most of it costs pennies. I should think the whole lot will cost about about £30 and most of it is re-usable.

You can order it all from an internet shop and have it delivered within 48 hours. Website is called www.art-of-brewing.co.uk/

If you have all that stuff all you need to do is tell me what you want to make the wine out of and I will give you a recipe.

Janstar · 25/02/2004 16:21

If you do place an order, make sure to order some all-purpose wine yeast as well while you're at it.

tamum · 25/02/2004 16:24

Another knitting fan here, but as several people have already pointed out that makes me v. trendy

Northerner · 25/02/2004 16:29

The wine making bit reminds me of when I had a Saturday job in a department store (many moons ago!) and some chap came up and asked me if we sold demijohns. I directed him to the gents underwear department thinking they were short long johns!

I do cross stitch and tapestry work, or at least I do when I have the time. I've stitched lots of things, including rugs.

Before Children I used to sing in a local choir as well......makes me shound very old!
