scrap metal collection, does this sound right?

i phoned the council yesterday about collecting a washing machine and tumble dryerm, and they wanted to charge me £30 per item so i said no and i'd get them to the tip somehow. but just now, a young-ish lad knocked on the door and asked if i'd let them take them Free Of Charge.

do places still pay for scrap metal and things like this? i cant see why someone would want to take a knackered old washing machine and dryer away FOC.

should i be worried? will they be fly-tipping? the back of the truck is full of scrap metal.

blimey no let them take it!! our council charge £50 to take away an old fridge, i was livid, in the end i just used the work van to take it to the tip (no charge) it's a blinkin disgrace
