Ok, dumbass car seat question . At what age did your child go into normal booster (the backless ones) ?

DD is 4 next month and is currently in a Britax Trio, using the back bit and the normal 3pt seatbelt. I noticed that a few of the other parents at DD's nursery just use the ordinary booster cushion type. Should I be moving DD on to that stage then ? I wouldn't have to buy a new seat or anything as the Trio is a 3 stage seat (as name would suggest !).

we got a booster seat when my son was about 3, i don't know now if that's right re the change in law though

misdee · 10/07/2006 11:01

dd1 is 6years old and still in high back booster (we have the height adjustable head rests). if your dd eyes are level with the top of the seat then its time to take the back off.

EvesMama · 10/07/2006 11:02

my dd is three and the booster cushion does state from three or 15kg, im dubious though, no side protection tho what more the side ones would help i dont know as theyre only bits of plastic arnt they!

LIZS · 10/07/2006 11:04

As of September she should continue to have a back until 25kg .

From Think ! Road safety site :

  1. What do you mean by "child restraints"?

"Child restraints" is the collective term in the seat belt wearing legislation for:

baby seats - rear-facing and for children up to 13 kgs (approx age birth to 9-12 months);;

child seats - forward facing and for children 9 kgs to 18 kgs (approx 9 months to 4 years);

booster seats - for children from 15 kgs to 25 kgs, or 15kgs and up to 36 kgs and up (from approx 4 years);

booster cushions - for children from 22 kgs and up (from approx 6 years)."

Misdee, DD is tall but her eyes are a long way off being level with the top of the headrest.

TBH, looking at the booster cushions, they don;t look like they do much safety-wise other than elevate the child to the position where the seatbelt would be effective in the event of a collision. The high back on ours feels more secure because we can fix the tension of the belt, it reduces any 'roll' or movement between the booster and the seat of the car when we go around corners etc. I do feel that the high back is more comfortable and supportive for DD (especially on long journeys), I was just wondering whether I was being a wee bit over protective of her over it, really.

Thanks for that LIZS . I'll be keeping her in the high back then

dont woprry about being over-protective. some kids commented on dd1 being in a 'baby seat' (we have jane ISOFIX doe the older 2) but as we had a car accident 2 years ago dd1 knows that car seats stop them being hurt so just shrugged.

NomDePlume · 10/07/2006 11:12

Thanks .

DD hasn't expressed any desire to change her seat in any way, so I haven't got that to contend with.

bear in my that many backless boosters dont have a 'clip' that fixes seatbelt in the correct position, so belt doesnt 'sit' across shoulder as it should. some do- my britax one does but we only use it abroad as dd2's (age 4) regular one is too big to take.

southeastastra · 10/07/2006 11:20

mine has a red clip on a separate belt, that you attach to the belt, and the seat belt works in the normal way

Cam · 10/07/2006 11:23

4, because she is very tall

Now doesn't have anything, same reason

New legislation states that all children under 135 cm have to use child restraints, probably affects most children under 11?

My dd is 143 cm at age 9

EvesMama · 10/07/2006 14:13

thanks for that, we have a redundant first class child seat and will now have a redundant booster cushion!..never mind saw a lovely booster chair at weekend..im sure mr mastercard wont mind!

singersgirl · 10/07/2006 14:23

We took DS1 out of the highback booster when he was 7, but he is very, very light, and according to LIZS' info, he is too light to just be on the cushion - but he will be 22kg soon, I'm sure (he's just under at the moment). DS2 weighs more, so we could swap them!

Bozza · 10/07/2006 14:27

I would stick as you are ndp. It is one of those sort of things that get pushed along too early. My DS is 5 and a half and still in the high back. He will be coming out of it when DD hits 33lb and can go into it. Seen as how it has taken her 6 months to get from 27 to 28 lbs that is not going to be anytime soon. I have bought one of the Britax ones with the belt adjustor that will eventually be DS's but is intended for occasional use when giving lifts to other children.
