Hi, looks like we are moving to Manchester. I did post a thread re how unsettling it is to move my 5/6yr old but (so sorry for going on) but now am just more interested in where pple think is an okish place to live. Know M a bit - went to Uni there then spent a yr in Chorlton about 5 yrs ago when ds1 was newborn. Chorlton has its good points but found it a bit stuck up tbh. Anyhoo, where are decent places to live in Manch? My dh's job is actually in Crewe, but I suppose we are looking at M cos we know it a bit (and have a couple of vague friends there. I guess schools are a big issue now too.

With many thanks in advance.

HI there - good luck with the move - we did it late last year and it has worked out well although still miss being close to friends and family although not that far!! if DH job in crewe have you not considered cheshire rather than manchester as a bit of a drive to get to manchester from crewe - south cheshire is lovely where i live (so not biased honest!) but nantwich, tarporely way would be good for you and brilliant schools apparently !! just a suggestion as obviously you may feel better somewhere you have experience of!

hi - what's your budget? Chorlton's got some lovely places but can be quite pricey. But if you've got lots of money then Didsbury's lovely - also can be a bit stuck up, but lovely little shops!

I'm in Heaton Chapel which we love - in Stockport and there's cheaper bits (where we are!), but you're next to the posh bits which is nice - little restaurants, shops and a lovely little independent cinema! Good schools in Heaton Chapel/Heaton Moor as well. Budget for a 3 bed semi is anything from about £190,000 in the less posh places, to £400,000 in Heaton Moor.

Don't know many places further out in Cheshire, but needless to say you'd need a fair amount of money...

It's quite a commute from Manchester to Crewe - though (will offend all people in Crewe now) Crewe doesn't have a great deal of charm, from what I've seen of the place. Like Dot, I like the Heatons - though I imagine they're quite pricey now - I used to live in Edgeley in Stockport which was cheap when we bought our first house there. Also agree with cleaninglady that Cheshire might be a better place to start - unless you have friends/family in Manchester and that's why you're thinking of there. We live in Macclesfield, though it's a lot more expensive here now than it was when we bought six years ago.

Tbh, the nice places in Manchester tend to be exorbitantly expensive - even the not so nice places are not cheap. I'd look at Stockport and Cheshire...and maybe just outside Crewe, there's some lovely countryside around there.

Actually, drove through Crewe last week and it was quite nice, lots of Victorian houses, nice ones.

What's your budget? How many bedrooms? Could do some mooching on RightMove for you.

SpoiralTheEejit · 10/07/2006 13:34

Cheadle to Crewe is about 1 hour drive

niceglasses · 10/07/2006 14:00

Thanks for this - erm, I guess 4 beds min - we have 3 kids. Budget, I don't know, I think our house is worth about £250,000 so up to around 300,000 would be our whack I think. Heaton Chapel/moor sound good.

Nice in Heaton Moor

katierocket · 10/07/2006 14:03

hello
We live in Heaton Mersey. Schools are pretty much all good around Heaton Mersey/heaton Moor. House prices have gone up ridiculously in the last few years but you'd definitely get something for £300k. I like Chorlton a lot but as dot said it is very expensive now. I'm not that keen on Didsbury to be honest- it's just full of big chains and has lost it's original charm.

Cheshire is very expensive although you could look at somewhere like Sandbach which is near to Crewe and has some nice areas.

SpoiralTheEejit · 10/07/2006 14:04

5 beds here!

SpoiralTheEejit · 10/07/2006 14:09

near Crewe again - get lots more for your money

SpoiralTheEejit · 10/07/2006 14:09

Right, I'm stopping now!

niceglasses · 10/07/2006 14:09

Wow, thanks for these Eejit - I think Heaton Moor/Chapel sound good. Don't think we could afford Didsbury!!

if you go for heaton mersey/heaton moor, worth seeing if the house is in the catchment area for Tithe Barn primary school - a very good school, has just had 'outstanding in all areas' from Ofsted (although no one stands a chance getting in unless you're in the catchment area). My DS goes to Didsbury Road primary and we're really happy with that (it just got 'Good with outstanding features' in recent Ofsted)

Dottydot · 10/07/2006 16:11

Broadstone Hall Primary school in Heaton Chapel is good as well - big, but comes out well in the league tables and has a lovely feel to it - ds1's just about to start there in September and so far we're happy with it...! £300,000 will get you a nice house in Heaton Chapel - I'll try and do some links...

Polgara2 · 10/07/2006 16:15

I would agree that its a fair drive to Crewe from Manchester and it won't be a pleasant one during rush hours! Sandbach is very nice as mentioned but there are lots of nice areas on the way to Crewe if you look around.

cardy · 10/07/2006 16:19

If you do decide on Heaton Chapel/Moor I don't think you'll have a problem with schools whichever catchment area you are in, all the schools are very good - one of the main attractions of the area. Also public transport links (train and buses) into Manchester are excellent.

Dottydot · 10/07/2006 16:22

hope this works - nice house nice road!

Dottydot · 10/07/2006 16:25

this is a fab road in Heaton Moor

ooh - I'd love this budget to play with!!!

I've walked past that house in Heaton Chapel a few times and wondered how much it was. It's in the catchment of St Thomas's which is a good school. Heaton Chapel has lots of nice victorian houses like that and for reasonable prices.

Dottydot · 10/07/2006 17:36

this is a very nice bit of Heaton Moor, so only 3 bedrooms!
