Someone must.

I do.

I love it 'cos I can translate some of the product names
Aaah, it's a poor substitute for the holiday we can't afford...

Never been to Ikea

moondog · 07/07/2006 23:24

I always have mad visions of Scandinavian Studies students going in and nicking all the books on the shelves.

Sctuaaly i do have a swedish friend in North Wales where I am ,and when i suggested it to him,he fropwned slightly and said he had never been to IKEA.

TooTicky · 07/07/2006 23:31

Actually, I always scour the shelves just in case, but I'd make them an offer, not nick it!

I've bought lots of Ikea things which were cheap and looked nice. But at least 2 chests of drawers have fallen to bits and some of the things that have a veneer and aren't solid wood end up looking pretty cheap and shabby after a bit. Happened to anyone else?

southeastastra · 08/07/2006 20:00

you get what you pay for, for the short term veneer things are ok, but i like to change alot anyway, i love ikea

Blondilocks · 08/07/2006 20:01

I think it's cool. Only really bought bits and pieces and not furniture. I like how they display things in room layouts.

noddyholder · 08/07/2006 20:04

They make it look nice in the catalogue and room sets but the quality isn't good at all

foxinsocks · 08/07/2006 20:06

I love the thought of it but hate it once I'm there (hate being forced in a certain direction and hate the no windows thing in the showroom/shop bit - feel like I'm trapped in a dungeon!)

In terms of shopping, if I could have one ikea wish, it would be that you could order their stuff online and have it delivered like any other normal sodding shop

EllaMinnowPea · 08/07/2006 20:11

foxinsocks - Ikea do sell online, but only in Sweden

foxinsocks · 08/07/2006 20:22

ooh, maybe they will do that here one day then!

SoupDragon · 08/07/2006 20:26

Me.

I go there straight from the school run, get a prime parking spot then in for free coffee/cheap breakfast until the store opens at 10. I can be out by 10:30 having gone round the store and paid

SoupDragon · 08/07/2006 20:27

Personally I think it is good quality for what you pay. Obviously it's not going to last for decades but for cheap furniture, it's fantastic. You only have to compare it to the cheap tat you get in B&Q/Homebase for example.

foxinsocks · 08/07/2006 20:28

oh you are lucky to live near one - I suppose my biggest problem is really the fact that it takes over an hour of nightmare cross-London driving to get to either Croydon or the one near Brent Cross (where virtually everytime we have been, there is some huge screw up on the north circular meaning it takes an entire day to get back)

if I had one round the corner, I'd probably be in there all the time!

southeastastra · 08/07/2006 20:29

yes, if you want something to last, go for the solid wood things, we've got a really great pine table that has lasted about 15 years so far, that's why i like it - there's such a range of qualities

SoupDragon · 08/07/2006 20:29

15 minutes, max...

Must go there soon actually, before the schools break up because I'm not going there in the hoidays!

God, I love IKEA! I furnished my first flat with IKEA, my house in France with IKEA and DD/DS's bedrooms (and ours) with...you guessed it! IKEA!!!

I refuse to buy non-flatpack until I know we are NEVER going to move again - only then will I purchase something I don't have to put together myself!

SpoiralTheEejit · 09/07/2006 17:55

I love it, won't hear a word said against it.

Arabica · 09/07/2006 23:35

I love it. We went straight there after having a v positive hospital appt and ran around buying lots of stuff that we're going to need for the new baby and which we'd been in denial about needing for the past 36 weeks. Also DH likes the food because it reinforces his belief that Icelandic food is superior to Swedish!
