Yes, it is best to have as many as possible to make your results work best. HOnestly. And don't be tempted to make them up as your graphs may look a bit wrong. Mumnset gets busier again later tonight so more people may help out then too.

Good point Twiglet.

Missy - what types of things do you want your graph to show? And what type of graph?

If you let me know I may be able to suggest how you can use this data. I am used to having to do it as I have to get my own pupils to do graphs daily!

binkie · 23/02/2004 18:37
  1. 2
  2. yes - lots more available - engineering & design have improved too
  3. no - always very careful
  4. stair gates, socket covers, fireguard, cupboard locks, anti-door-slammer-things, ad hoc clever things rigged up by dh (eg gas fire switch anti-fiddle protector), safety bars outside their bedroom window
  5. all did their job - can't think of any which didn't really work
  6. stair gates
  7. [you'll be able to answer this one once you get all your responses! sounds like stair gates again so far]
  8. before - suppose car seat
  9. maybe socket covers
  10. loads - see above! But also: putting things out of reach, making a dedicated medicine cabinet that locked, always checking house for small swallowables & removing
  11. bars on their bedroom window (it's on fourth floor)
  12. just watching out for possible risks - free
  13. yes - because of peace of mind
  14. John Lewis & catalogues
  15. not safety equipment - only clothes & books
  16. I think I wouldn't buy 2nd hand, so not relevant

Here are my answers.

  1. Four (First child born 1975, last in '96)

  2. Yes. More of them and and better made/ easier to use.

  3. Not really,

  4. Stair gates, car seats, fireguard, reins, corner protectors, socket covers, cupboard door locks, gadget to stop doors slamming onto fingers.

  5. All were effective.

  6. Car seat, stair gate, reins, fireguard, cupboard door lock for household chemicals.

  7. Car seat, stair gate, cupboard door

  8. Car seat

  9. None!

  10. Stair gates, fireguard, reins, corner protectors, socket covers, cupboard door locks, gadget to stop doors slamming onto fingers.

  11. Car seat

  12. Corner protectors

  13. yes, on the whole. Stair gates are a bit iffy at times, fiddly and expensive for what they are.

  14. Baby stores, DIY stores

  15. No

16)N/A

Bozza · 24/02/2004 11:57

1 1

sykes · 24/02/2004 12:09
  1. 2 2)Yes, to some extent/more information readily available re products 3)Not really 4)Stair gates, socket covers, fire guards, window locks, cupoard locks 5)Stair gates, socket covers, fire guards, car seats 6)All of them 7)Stair gates, socket covers, fire guards 8)Car seat 9)None 10)Baby monitor 11)Car seat 12)Putting things out of reach, organising a medicine cabinet with thermometer 13)Yes 14)John Lewis/Mothercare 15)No 16)N/a
LIZS · 24/02/2004 12:26
  1. 2 2)not really 3)not really 4)stairgate (now used on kitchen), socket covers, car seats, harness in pushchair, foam anti door slam things, bath seat 5)car seat 6)car seat 7)car seat 8)buying car seat 9)baby monitor (gift) 10)used car seat, monitor 11)car seat - but that has had the longest lifespan so probably not per use. 12)elastic around drawer handles , using observation and common sense to anticipate problems 13)generally yes, but the advertising hype tends towards being overprotective. A few key good quality items are of more value than many of the gadgets but you cannot replace basic supervision and common sense 14)Mothercare, Ikea, independent baby store 15)stairgate 16)that all the pieces were there, in good condition and it fitted securely

Might be more interesting to see what people bought which were a complete waste of time ! Good luck, not really sure how you plan to collate all this.

prettycandles · 24/02/2004 14:55
  1. 2
2. no 3. no 4. carseats, gates in kitchen and balcony doorways, corner covers on some furniture, socket covers on some sockets, door catches and/or extra locks on some cupboards. 5. each effective for its own purpose, except for corner covers - which constantly fall off. 6.
