Advice needed for dh's wine website

Dh is in the process of setting up a wine education web site. He is doing a key words exercise for the wine school website and he'd like a little help in looking at things from slightly different angles - for example female perspectives, housewives, mothers.....

As he explained it to me, to optimise your chances of somebody getting to your website via a search engine you make use of key words and key phrases in the content of your webpages, especially your homepage. If you get the right key words - the search engines pick up your site very quickly and you make it onto the all important 1st page of a search, which naturally increases the chances of somebody clicking through to your site.

So, I'd be really grateful if anyone could give a wee bit of thought to some of the phrases that the following types of people might type into a search engine if they were interested in finding a site which could teach them more about wine so that when they go to buy wine in a shop, supermarket, restaurant, pub even - or when they are having friends round, or for a special occasion, a party, a special present, Christmas, Easter.

What would you type in to a search engine?

It would also help if you could also say what sort of "category" you fit into: Mums (porbably - but that are some men on the site too )SAHM, WOHM, age range (dh and I are both over 40, so maybe we have a different persepctive)

Some of the other categories that dh thought of were People on a budget or Girlies having a girlies night in

What was intertesting was when I told dh what I would have put into Google, that scored really "Low" (ie not good) - but the lady who is advising him said that "that was because I was different".

I'm not going to say what I typed in - but the interesting thing is, even though it "scored low" - the results that I got were just what I wanted and I found sites similar to what dh will be offering - or at least along those lines.

So now I want to see what Mumsnetters would suggest!

Once he is ready to launch his site, he will pay is £30 to advertise it on here!

Wine advice

Working mum aged 37 - middle price (£5-9 a bottle)new world wine drinker on a Friday/Saturday night with DH after DS has gone to bed.

wilbur · 07/07/2006 09:27

I would probably put in words like wine+food+recipe or +wine +suggestions

in that I would likely be looking for wine to get with a specific meal I have planned. I doubt I would search for internet advice for girls' night wine though - that is a cost/volume issue only!

hulababy · 07/07/2006 09:29

wine advice
wine help
food wine combination
food wine match

I am a mum to one pre schooler (age 4), I work PT, I am 33yo, from Yorkshire. Spend about £5-£10 on a botle of wine generally apart from special events. Prefer white and also champagne, but like red too. DH drink about 3-4 bottles a week. Generally buy from places like Sunday Times Wine club (via FIL) and also supermarket.

wines compared or wine advice or wine box

we usually have a box of red (the best box you can get - usually new world - I know boxes are considered cr*p but TBH the one we get seems very nice) because I only have a small amount and dh drinks more beer than wine, so we find a box very practical.
I drink half a glass every other night, dh will drink 1 or 2 glasses.

MrsBadger · 07/07/2006 09:30

Google strings I'd try:

wine advice
wine recommendations
party wine
matching wine to food
best supermarket wines
wine basics
understanding wine labels
understand restaurant wine list
wine jargon

(NB congratulations for using Google effectively - barely anyone does)

wilbur · 07/07/2006 09:34

Sorry, forgot to say - I'm 37 mother of three. Like wine although I don't drink it every night. Dh has a glass or two most nights (also drinks beer) and he is a wine society member so we get a lot through them.

prettybird · 07/07/2006 09:34

Thanks girls - that is reall useful! Keep it coming!

I've just sent dh a link to this, so he can look at the responses himself.

barbecue wine

low alcohol wine

champagne substitutes

celebration wine

wine curry

party wine

Ladymuck · 07/07/2006 09:55

If I wanted to search for advice on a wine I would probably search for:-

"wine drinking times"
"vintage"
"recommended wines for meals"
"champagne vintages"

prettybird · 07/07/2006 10:20

Oddbins staff are good for recommnedations aren't they Pruni. Dh can never understadn why people say they can't think of what to get him for his birthday: he says it's easy - just go into Oddbins and say you want to spend "x".

Dh hasn't done the WSET but has just completed the second year of the Master of Wine course. He dferred sitting the exams though - he'll probably do them next year.

I wonder how these responses "score"? - I'll get dh to tell me tonight and let you know.

I'd put in

Wine recommend (food I was going to eat it with e.g. scallops)
or
Wine £5-£10 (or whatever)

Age 44, 2 kids, Work full time, usually spend £60-£70 a month on wine (mostly at Oddbins)

What a great thread. I stick to wines I know and like, so don't google wine too often.

I sometimes search for grape varieties to see which other wines might taste the same as my favourites.

I'm 35 with 1 DD who is 3.5 and 2 DSS of 20 and 15.

crunchie · 07/07/2006 16:45

Wine Tasting
Wine reviews
Wine ideas
food/wine
what wine?

I tend to drink under £5 wine, usually buy loads from France and then top up if needs be. I drink 1 or 2 bottles a week MAX. DH hardly drinks. Fave wine at the mo is Sauvingon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, Also like Merlot (Love Chillian wines, and buy Castillo Del Diablo brand a lot - £5 bottles always yummy, recommended by Malcolm Gluck) But wine from local co-op in an emergency, or supermarket if planning.

23balloons · 07/07/2006 16:59

I would probably type 'white wine' but don't think I would ever think of searching the net for wine advice. Normally buy at Tesco or Sainsburys and look for wine that has almost gone from the shelf indicating popular wine. If it is the type I like I will try a bottle. Never buy Chardonay as I just don't like it.

SAHM 37

lorina · 07/07/2006 19:18

Would google things like ....

fruity english wine

organic wine

special wines £10

I'm nearly 40 and a sahm who drinks wine most days at £3 to £5 a bottle but will spend £6 to £25 on something to give a family/friend

good luck

SenoraPostrophe · 07/07/2006 19:23

To be honest I wouldn't type anything in because it wouldn't occur to me that an unbaiased wine advice site existed (I'd assume all were selling the stuff). and with sites like that, sometimes the best way to market in the search engines is just to write as much spiel as you can, both for your sites and for other people's without worrying about it too much. I know, I do this stuff for a living.

But anyway, I guess if it did occur to me, the phrase I'd use would be "wine reviews"

Kenneth · 07/07/2006 19:24

Never googled wine but would ask for

good recommended cheap budget wines
recommended affordable quality wines

They would be my key words

Female, early 40s, wohm.

BettySpaghetti · 07/07/2006 20:08

We've never googled wine (tend to buy in France, wine clubs or supermarket) but I would probably google:
recommended wines
red wines

DP suggested :
wine clubs
wine tasting
wine collecting

Both late 30's, I'm a SAHM, DP self-employed
