Took me 4 times to pass.
In the third test I basically turned into a gibbering, apologising, babbling freak. I made so many mistakes, the worse of which had to be missing a filter light due to staring at a tree!!! At the end of the test, as a sat there, chin-wobbling she just gave me this pitying yet horrified look.
Imagine my horror, when at test number 4 I am confronted with the same lady. After a minute or two, I realised she hadn't recognised me and I decided that there was no way I was going to 1. Act like a complete t**t in front of her again 2. Do anyting to let her remember me from before. So, I decided to try and take on the persona of a confident, happy-go-lucky driver. Amazingly IT WORKED. After a while, I really fell into the role and actually started to feel confident and hey presto - I PASSED.
Even if you are a good driver, I think the testers just really don't like putting nervous people on the road. If you can hide those nerves and try not even to mention anyting to do with being nervous, it really ups your chances. Plus mind over matter.
Good luck for next time! Don't give up.
BTW - took my dad 9 times to pass and that was in the 80s when it was allot bloody easier. My mum passed 1st time, despite having a panic attack haqlf way round - which I will never understand how she pulled that off because she scares the hell out of me even to this day and has put white spirits in the car instead of water - and driven it - twice!! (Art teach - Evian bottle mix up).
