head should be covered if married

shoulders and tops of arms covered

depends on synagogue though

suzywong · 05/07/2006 12:35

well we didn't think it was The Little White Chapel, tee hee

Thomcat · 05/07/2006 12:37

Deffo have to have arms covered so if wearing dress take wrap, shawl thing to cover your arms.

If you go with you DH / DP you'll be on seperate side of synagouge from him with all theother women.

ComeOVeneer · 05/07/2006 12:41

How covered does my head need to be? I have a fascinator but does it need full coverage?

OP posts:
Twiglett · 05/07/2006 14:02

I have absolutely no idea what a fascinator is .. but basically so long as you wear a hat you're fine .. you don't have to cover all your hair

bundle · 05/07/2006 14:05

here's one

Twiglett · 05/07/2006 14:07

well that's just daft frippery and as a friend I'd like to suggest you don't wear it

.. seriously? ... think you need more of a hat-type thing

Twiglett · 05/07/2006 14:08

something like this

NotQuiteCockney · 05/07/2006 14:09

I don't think a fascinator counts. What flavour of Judaism is it?

ComeOVeneer · 05/07/2006 14:10

The one I have is from accessorize and is about 1/4 the size of that (more a fancy hairclip really). That means I'll have to get to Brent Cross on Saturday to buy a hat I guess.

twig, now you're talking. that'll shame all those women in their sheitls

ComeOVeneer · 05/07/2006 14:11

Twig that would complement my dress perfectly .

you can always just wear a head scarf tied in a fashionable manner

how orthodox is the synagogue the ceremony is being held at? Basically the more religious the more you need to cover up

crunchie · 05/07/2006 14:12

Depends on the fascinator, some are like hats, others like a hairband. I would take 2 options, the fascinator and bring the hat in case.

Orthodox I would suggest full hat, reform/liberal/progressive fascinator

Twiglett · 05/07/2006 14:12

can you not borrow a chapeau?

bundle · 05/07/2006 14:13

could you get away with a mantilla?

PrettyCandles · 05/07/2006 14:14

Dress ought to be at least knee length. Longer if poss, as when you sit down it rides up. Wear tights/stockings.

Fascinator should be fine.

When I go to a church (wedding or otherwise) I wear exactly the same sort of thing as I would to synagogue: no plunging cleavage, shoulders covered, arms covered to elbow, skirt below the knee, tights, etc, but perhaps my idea of what is modest and respectful dress is a cultural thing anyway.

ComeOVeneer · 05/07/2006 14:14

I don't know how religious that synagogue is (anyone know anything about Stanmore and Canons park synagogue?)

OP posts:
DumbledoresGirl · 05/07/2006 14:16

PMSL at Twiglett's hat.

If the synagogue is so strict, wouldn't there have been some mention of acceptable attire in the invitation?

NotQuiteCockney · 05/07/2006 14:16

Are the Bride and Groom Orthodox? Or otherwise?

Twiglett · 05/07/2006 14:16

if your dress is red .. which I'm thinking it is .. try this

this is the dress I'm wearing. It does come below the knee, but the scarf is very sheer so not suitable for covering arms. I wanted a shrug or something to wear over it but can't find any I like, so I guess I'll use a pashmina to cover arms.
