When my grandmother-in-law sends a card saying "Annwyl BabyDragon" I assume it's some sort of affectionate greeting?

Obviously she didn't actually use BabyDragon, I'd be a little freaked out if she had.

it means "loved one"

moondog · 04/07/2006 20:30

yes, or 'dear' (same thing)

SoupDragon · 04/07/2006 20:31

Ah. Thanks No one in this house speaks welsh. She could write anything and we'd never know

Gingerbear · 04/07/2006 20:32

I think Annwyl is a name too? (please correct me if I am wrong oh welsh one?)

NomDePlume · 04/07/2006 20:34

Never heard Annwyl as a name. Annwyn, yes.

When I did Welsh at school we were taught to use annwyl in letters too, like you would use 'dear xxxx' in letters, IYSWIM.

SpaceCadet · 04/07/2006 20:37

its used to say "dear" as in dear baby dragon

SoupDragon · 04/07/2006 20:40

At least she won't be able to fool us with her Welsh now I can check on Mumsnet

You know, the lovely thing about Welsh (well, there are lots of lovely things tbh) is that you use 'cariad' to refer to your girl/boyfriend.
It means 'love' or 'darling' but doesn't sound remotely silly or pretentios.
I loved it when I met dh and could refer to 'my love'

Blandmum · 04/07/2006 20:42

I love calling the kids Cariad. We have a cwtch as well...much nicer than a cuddle, and such a good place to store the wellies!

SoupDragon · 04/07/2006 20:44

How do you pronounce cariad? That's the one word she uses that I did actually know the meaning of.

And whilst I'm at it, how do you pronounce annwyl?

OP posts:
moondog · 04/07/2006 20:46

'car' as in the first syllable of 'caravan'.
'iad' sounds like 'yad' to rhyme with 'bad'

'Annwyl' is first sound of 'Anna' plus 'Will'

Blandmum · 04/07/2006 20:46

carry/ curry (a blur of the two) ad (sort of)
an oil (sort of!)

Blandmum · 04/07/2006 20:46

sorry, I blew the last one! [blush}

moondog · 04/07/2006 20:47

No,brave and valid effort I think MB.

Blandmum · 04/07/2006 20:50

It has been a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time since if had any welsh lessons.

I have always regretted that dh didn't get posted to Valley (due to the testicular cancer, long and pointless story), as I would have learned Welsh.

I had a great, great uncle who was reputed to have been a bard, and I can't speak a word

SoupDragon · 04/07/2006 20:51

Pretty much as I'd guessed Ta.

moondog · 04/07/2006 20:51

moondog · 04/07/2006 20:51

Blandmum · 04/07/2006 20:58

moondog · 04/07/2006 21:09

Ahthat's where I got cnfused..I thought you had been in Valley (knew you weren't now obviously) not that yuo were merely considrering it.

at cancer. All ok now I hope??????

Blandmum · 04/07/2006 21:12

testcular cancer go the all clear 2 years ago. 6 months later he was diagnosed with a chronic form of leukemia. Dodgy goods my dh!

Has his 6 months check up tomorrow, so I'm shitting myself. He is as cool as a cucumber

Totaly asymtomatic atm...long may that last

moondog · 04/07/2006 21:21

Oh God!!!!
Fingers crossed for you all.
Will you tell us how it goes????????

Blandmum · 04/07/2006 21:25

I tend to bore mn with it.

I get very tense and posting helps a bit. We will not get the results until the afternoon.

So far he is 2 year post diagnosis and still has no symptoms. I shouldn't be so dramatic, since they said that it could be 10-15 years until they have to 'do' anything. But I worry about the 'could be' nd imagine the worst.

Good news is that the RAF consider him fitter than he has been in years. He also has a bone marrow match in one of his brothers, should he ever need it, and treatments are getting better all the time. I shouldn't faff, but I don't seem to be able to stop myself

moondog · 04/07/2006 21:26

How the hell have I missed all this then????

It all sounds very promising but you would have to be made of steel to not worry obviously.

Shall be watching out for the update tomorrow.....

Blandmum · 04/07/2006 21:28

We have done 2 cancers, 3 wars, a nasty bout of pancreatitis (not alchol diven) no wonder I have grey hair

I should have worried myself skinny, but it doesn't seem to work that way!
