can someone help me with citations? virtually everything I read uses ibid for consecutive references to the same source, and Smith op. cit. for non-consecutive ones. I'm using EndNote which very nicely inserts my references for me, and will format them according to whichever I choose of 1000-plus styles. But the recommended ones for footnotes (have to use footnotes not in-text citations) do not use op. cit. I have tried MLA, Chicago and Harvard but am not getting any op cits. Short of applying 1000-plus styles and seeing which one uses op. cit. I don't know what to do. So here I am - does anyone know the name of the style that uses op cit? does anyone know how to get Endnote to use op cit? I really want to use op cit as I'm writing something with a maximum word count and footnotes are included. If you're still with me many many thanks. If you can answer my question even more thanks and a sizeable chunk of respect too

Those quotation marks and their position in relation to the punctuation are American-looking. Are you using Chicago or something? If you set to to MHRA do you get a better result. (The most 'offensive'-looking thing to me is the position of the full-stop, but I am a sad old pedant!)

Otherwise, though, that looks great to me. The short title works perfectly.

yes - it's chicago - I like the fact it uses italics rather than underlining, but I'll have a play with some of the others - I'm happy in principle though!

What an interesting discussion I couldn't manage without Endnote now, though I never use footnotes. It's just such a fab way of storing all your references, but like MrsB I just do cite while you write, pretty much. Glad you got it sorted!

IIRC medical journal references, which are the ones I have to use, are:

Authors' names, StudyTitle, BMJ, 2004:12:68 (12 being the issue number and 68 being the page number).

And then references to the same study directly underneath would be Ibid.

References to the same study elsewhere in the text would be op. cit.

References to other works by the same authors would be given in full at first mention.

If there are several different studies mentioned - so op. cit. isn't clear - I'd do a brief refernence to authors' names and study title.

Does Endnote allow you to follow the MHRA style? That should give you italics and allow you to use short-titles.

I'm outing my male pseudonym (can't be bothered to change back) - Tamum - I'm really not sure I'd go so far as to say it's interesting! But I am very taken with EndNote as well. I use the note function quite a lot - really handy. although I keep changing my mind about which keywords to use

tamum · 05/07/2006 21:04

I've never seen op cit used in a medical journal or science journal to be honest. The references are usually either numbered or cited as Smith et al 1998, with the full reference at the end. Different medical journals use different styles though, there are zillions of possible styles in Endnote.

Well yes, maybe interesting was wording it a bit strongly I do wonder how I ever managed before though, and importing references from ISI is just the business.....

Good point Tamum. The kind of thing I was talking about is when I'm writing something for professionals which refers to peer-reviewed publications but is not in itself for a peer-reviewed publication.

When I write directly for peer-reviewed journals they sort the footnotes out themselves, thank the Lord!

This is why, when I use anything at all, I use Procite rather than Endnote - don't know about your specific problem, but in general Endnote is better set up for sciences and Procite for arts.

Mostly I just use Word though.
