I have just recieved my course pack and i am impressed (not by the price). The course looks interesting and i think i will enjoy doing it. I am just wondering if any other people are just about to start the course and what they think about the course materials. Also I think it may be a little lonely studying on my own, so if anybody would like to chat about the course. experiences etc, feel free to email me via mumsnet.

Just noticed on this thread that Alibubbles is doing it too.

nutcracker · 21/02/2004 18:43

Do you mind if i ask how much it is, and what qualification it leads to, if any

Jess234 · 21/02/2004 20:12

Thanks Twink.

Nutcracker, The course cost £75, it?s a new openings course, from what I know it?s a basic course designed to introduce you to the Open University. You do gain some points for completing the course and these can go towards a degree.

I?m really doing the course for something to keep my mind working while I?m not working and looking after my baby. I hope it will also confirm or introduce new ways on how I bring my daughter up.

I'm doing it too!

I want to go on and do the childhood and youth studies degree.

libb · 21/02/2004 21:08

I'm just starting the D100 course - not sure if I fancy the Psychology or Childhood Studies degree eventually. I guess I have a while to go yet though!

Good luck to everyone doing their courses!

OldieMum · 21/02/2004 22:25

I have a friend who tutors on this course. She taught it last year for the first time and found it fascinating. The students enjoyed it very much, too.

alibubbles · 22/02/2004 10:29

jess234, yes, I have just received my course materials but haven't really had time to look at them as I've not been too well for the last week ( bit of a bummer as it is half term and no mindies to look after, did get some skiing in though!)

I'm doing it just to keep my brain active and I always enjoy enhancing my knowledge about children as it does help with my work as a childminder. I am soon, hopefully to be accredited so I can offer nursery education to 3 year olds, so all study is in my favour.

Good to hear that some others are doing it, we can have our own support group.

wog · 22/02/2004 10:33

sorry to but in but what is the course - is it a home study, what qualifications do you need, what qualifications does it lead to and what kind of career comes from the qualifications?

Paula71 · 22/02/2004 11:20

I was thinking of doing OU to get some power when I rejoin the job market when ds twins go to school - that gives me a couple of years to get started.

What careers would the childhood or youth studies degree open?

Wouldn't it be great if Mumsnet had somewhere we could get jobs advice - shared between us all? I mean, tips and ideas on how to do what job would be rewarding - I have had so many rotten jobs and as for the good ones, the hours won't match my commitment to my boys!

Sorry Jess for hijacking your topic, I seem to do that a lot

Stargazer · 22/02/2004 11:21

Hi Jess234 - If you're studying with the OU, you should be able to access alsorts of conferences via their Firstclass system - I use lots Can do lots of reading and not much studying However, there may be an online conference for your course. If you go to your OU student page, you should find the relevant info. Have fun. What course code is it? Sounds interesting. I'm about to start on ST240 - Chemical Environment. Best wishes.

Jess234 · 22/02/2004 20:35

Hi

Thanks for all your replies.

I?m glad to hear others are doing the course, like you said alibubbles we can support each other.

I was looking through the course guide and felt a bit down, but after reading the replies on here they have got me looking forward to it again.

woq, it is a home study course, but from what I have read so far you do get support when needed from a tutor. You don?t need any qualifications to start it. I am probably not the best person to ask what it leads on to because
I?ve not really looked that far into it. I?m mainly doing it as I have a 6 month old daughter and would like to understand her more and also to keep my mind busy.

stargazer, I have read about the firstclass system but have not had a look yet, will do though.

The course code is Y156 CG. I think its best to look on the Internet site for the course, as I couldn?t find it in the prospectus a while ago.

Thanks again for all the replies and maybe we could keep this thread going, even if we aren?t doing the same courses.

You've got me tempted now. I may go and have another look on the site.

Jess234 · 22/02/2004 21:23

Not sure if there was a deadline to join for the course starting in March, but its worth a try if your thinking of doing it now.

From what i can remember it does start at different times of the year. The info should all be on the website.

I am doing this course too....have started reading the book and am a little disappointed that it seems to go from baby to school age...misses my toddlers age!! However, I guess I was expecting too much from usch a short course. Have studied with OU for a few years, and only doind this as I now have two dd's 6.5 months and 2.5 yr old, so want something not too demanding to keep me occupied! Hope to be able to keep in touch with others on the course here.....Good luck!

stinky · 23/02/2004 13:56

I did U212 Childhood last year which was fascinating. It looks a childhood in different cultures and made me much more open-minded about child-rearing. For example, we strap our kids into pushchairs for safety, but a Vietnamese mother would be horrified at the thought of "tying" a child to a pushchair!!

Would thoroughly recommend the course.

lilibet · 27/02/2004 13:36

I'm just browsing the OU website and fancy starting something to prove that my brain still works. I'm looking at a short (20 week) course that would last from May to September.
Any ou'ers out there who have any tips and advice?
