We really need a "home" section!!!

DP has a mark on one if his ties - how do I get it off? Can I bung it in washer?

What's it made of? if synthetic or synthetic mix then washing machine. if it's silk i'd try sponging it or dry clean.

Having tried this I would say a resounding 'no'!! I think its not just the material but how it is sewn together IFSWIM. Ties that aren't supposed to be washed curl up inside and you can't ever get them properly flat again. Some ties are made to be washable though, but if it doesn't say so on the label I wouldn't do it! Try Marialuisa's suggestion and spot clean if you can. You can buy spay dry cleaning fluid and tie cleaning sachets which are OK for spot cleaning. Think they may have come from the Tie Rack? Hope that helps!

Please Dry Clean. Good ties are silk, or at least a blend which doesn't respond well to washing and would probably also go out of shape. Spot on tie would usually be some kind of food - probably greasy, so won't respond to spongeing either.

You can get spot dry cleaner things that you could use - mind you I would just have it dry cleaned - safer and the cost of a dry clean for a tie is far cheaper than buying a new one - I put all of DPs in once at Xmas and once before we go away for the summer hols - that way they are all clean and sparkly and he looks all shiney and lovely to go to work each day - yep I can hear crys of 'Get a Life' resounding in my ears!!

dd got school paint on a tie she'd borrowed for fancy dress, I put it in the washing machine and it came out and tie was absolutely fine (it wasn't silk, felt like school tie)..although if it's one of those nice paisley kind of ones that is slightly nicer than your average school tie, perhaps you could hand wash it?

I've never had trouble washing them, I just have to try to remember not to put them in the tumble dryer afterwards...silk ties do not like that at all!
