Economy class plane seats should not recline!

That is my thought after travelling home from Florida on Tuesday/Wednesday.

We flew Virgin but even so the leg room is still pants. On the whole most people were really considerate and few reclined there seats. So why did me, Dha nd DD get the obe family that decided that there seats had tp be reclined the whole journey home?! Argh!!!

Dh is 6 feet1. The bloke in front tried to recline but got fed up with DH's knees jammed in his backhe did sit it back up again soon after. However his two young children "had" to have their seats reclines as far as possible the whole journey - only sat up when asked to for meal time and when take off/landing by air hostess. I spent the whole journey feeling cramped and claustrophic. I couldn't watch Tv properly as my screen was so close to my face and at a funny angle. I couldn't do my puzzle book/sudoku as I couldn't lean over the tray to write. DD struggled to be able to sit on my lap for sleepy cuddles. It was a real PITA!

Why?! It is so unneccesary and so inconsiderate when room is so limited anyway.

I really think it should not be possible to recline seats right back in economy when leg room is so small. You should have to pay more to go into premium class or higher to get that privledge!!!

Rant over - my legs are no fully stretched and uncramped again

i avoid long haul flights for this reason.

Blondilocks · 02/07/2006 22:23

I agree with 2manypimms I'm afraid.

If it bothered me that much I'd probably ask them if they wouldn't mind putting their seat up a bit, but otherwise I'd just put up with it (the chances are I'd be doing the same).

I'm short, but why should I sleep bolt upright just because I'm short while someone else behind me is tall? I'd be paying just as much as them for the seat.

I also agree with the person who said something about children kicking the seat! If any children behind me were doing that then I'm afraid I would have to have a moan at their parents.

I can't believe people actually avoid longhaul flights for this reason. Think of all the destinations your missing out on.

Also you can just as easily get DVT from sitting on buses or in fact anywhere for a long period of time.

Well, if you lot think its bad, imagine what its like for us up in the front. NO leg room, NO arm room, NO head room, a long time sat, and trust me that does become very tiring on the body. Esp. as we are not allow out now to stretch our legs like we use to, and to make matters worse a control column between my legs!!!! Not anywhere near as comfortable as the passengers seating!

I agree with only travelling if you can afford to go Club or First etc. The only reason economy travel is soooo bad is because the masses want to be able to fly, and the only way that'll work is to have a lot of seats in a smaller area in order to keep the cost low. As GEM13 said it use to be regarded as a once in a lifetime experience, so you should be happy that it?s become an affordable option for holidays.

So either fly first or don?t fly at all.

and if we choose not to fly, then you're out of a job, mr blondilocks, or on overnight mail flights with no cabin crew to even make you a coffee - diddums.

Blondilocks · 02/07/2006 22:51

Not so. Back before travel was available to the masses, when it was a very exclusive mode of transportation my job was better. Better T&C's and better lifestyle, and even if the masses didn?t travel there are and always will be plenty of people who service is most important of all. Therefore I shall always have a place flying Corporate Jets or flying a jumbo with 100 people ob board. I?m just saying that if it is sooooo bad, then either upgrade or choose a ship liner instead of an airliner.

Airlines need pax (in volume) Airports need pax (in volume).Without the masses prepared to pay to fly economy, you'd be back flying DC3's taking spotters on joyrides.
Bet you don't fly first or business unless you are on concessions with an upgrade.

QueenPeaHead · 02/07/2006 23:44

hula there is an argument for saying that if your dh is 6ft 1 and objects to others reclining, HE should pay a bit more and fly in a premium class. why should everyone sit bolt upright on a longhaul flight?
If you want comfort, don't fly cattle class. if you fly cattle class, don't complain.

or has someone already pointed that out, I haven't read the whole thread.

Chandra · 02/07/2006 23:46

AA is no longer what they used to be, they have ditched the legroom campaign and the space is as cramped as with other airlines.

Blondilocks · 03/07/2006 05:21

If, like in the 60's then most if not all of the aircraft was not economy then the price would be higher, or course, to sustain economic. Im just saying that the reson why economy is like it is, is because of the demand for people wanting to fly like that without to much care for the comfort. Now if people always complained (like they do!!) and always upgraded to club etc, and economy was left 80%full, then slowely club would be enlarged and take a much larger section of the hull. Lets face it you get what you pay for in life.
And btw I do always travel first/business/or club reguardless of concessions.

So, what are the best airlines for longhaul?

QPH - agree it's great to upgrade for comfort, but I always choke when I see that the price is often more than double...which I decide isn't worth it. I do however, fantasize about getting on an airplane and turning left instead of right....

To be fair as well it's not like you don't know about it before you fly.

Essentially you're paying to get to somewhere different quickly, not paying for a new armchair, so the lack of comfort is something that many people are willing to put up with.

On a slightly different note did anyone see the article in the paper about potentially having people standing on planes on short flights to fit more in? Can't remember where this came from (whether it was an idea or a proper consideration) but no matter how cheap it is I'll still be opting for a seat!
