Anyone paid for white fillings?

PanicPants · 30/06/2006 17:11

I've just had to have an old filling replaced and I chose to have a white one put in, instead. I had to pay £55 for it privately even though I'm still on mat leave.

I'm wondering if it was a bit cheaper because I didn't have to pay for the treatment - just the filling, or if that price sounds about right.

Now I'm home and looked in the mirror I'm so pleased as you can't tell theres a filling there.

Now I want all my old mercury fillings taken out and replaced with white ones. Would a dentist do that? Even though they don't need to be replaced?

my dentist charges about £90 for a white filling, why didn't you get it free?

PanicPants · 30/06/2006 17:24

Because I could have had the standard filling for free, so it was my choice. But I'm still pleased with it. Just wanted to know if it was cheaper overall than if I'd not been on mat leave

I paid to have a silver crown ( at the back - nhs) replaced wtih a porcelain one I couldn't believe what a difference it made when I smiled/laughed etc and people could see it. I would have done it uears ago if i'd known

spidermama · 30/06/2006 17:55

You have to be careful about uprooting all that mercury because it's quite toxic when disturbed. Some dentists specialise in doing this safely, but I would read up about it if I were you.

PanicPants · 30/06/2006 17:55

I know apronstrings, never really thought about it before and it was on a whim that I asked about it.

Totally converted now - Will have no money for food, but my teeth will look better!

dh had a white filling a few years ago and the bloody thing kept falling out, his dentist did say that they aren't as tough(?) as the amalgam ones but he could have just been talking crap to cover bad workmanship

PanicPants · 30/06/2006 17:57

Oh no! Spidermania!!

Hadn't thought about that. Maybe just the couple I have on the bottom then.

Composite fillings arent available on the NHS unless they are really obvious ones on the front side of your front teeth, so it doesnt matter if you leave it until after your exemtion runs out.

The price you paid sounds about right for a smallish one.

Also, it is true that they arent as sound the larger they get.

madmarchhare · 30/06/2006 18:00

Re the amalgam thing, they are going to need replacing at some point though...

Alipiggie · 30/06/2006 18:02

I paid 45 pounds to get one in just before Maternity benefit ran out. They do not last like mercury amalgam ones so chance are it'll need replacing. Holland puts in white fillings as standard as does the US (three times the price here mind you) No wonder you have to be a millionaire here to have great teeth . Do check up on having mercury ones removed as suggested. Perhaps just consider having the most obvious ones replaced.

PanicPants · 30/06/2006 18:33

Think I might just ask about the 2 obvious ones I've got at the bottom then, and then when/if the others need replacing I'll have them done in white

Dh just had one done, I think it's £80 for white , £43 for silver. (it's an nhs dentist but obviously he pays) He's having another in a week, so that's £175 for two teeth lol! He did ask me which I thought and I insisted on him having white.

When I was pg with ds, I had two fillings, both were done white (they didn't ask or anything, think I'd have been horrified though if it had have been silver as they look shocking) and I didn't pay any extra. Need two this time too, am panicking as new dentist!!!!

MrsSpoon · 30/06/2006 18:43

My DH decided to have all his amalgam fillings removed (believed they may have been giving him health problems, but that's a whole thread of its own) and they were done by a dentist who specialised in this and believed that amalgam was harmful. They put something in the mouth that is supposed to stop or at least reduce the amount of mercury getting into your system.

However within a very short time (couple of years at the most) my DH's new white fillings in his back teeth were leaking and his current dentist replaced them with gold (at very great expense). Current dentist advises that white is not used on back teeth as it shrinks and if this is left unchecked decay can be really bad. DH's teeth ended up a mess and he spent hours in the dentist's chair putting it right again.

I have a lot of fillings (courtesy of a childhood rogue-of-a-dentist who made up work to do as he went along) - they have needed replacing over the years, and I always have them replaced with white fillings.

I haven't had any problems with the back ones any more than those nearer the front.

I have a private dentist (it took me a long time to find one I trusted after my early experiences) and she is wonderful. My teen dd had to have her first filling and I paid the extra to have a white one - I was so self-conscious about how "grey" my mouth looked, and didn't want her to experience the same feeling.

PanicPants · 30/06/2006 23:05

Yeah, my mouth has that 'grey' appearence - yuk!

dp is in the process of getting a load of dental work done and he's getting all white ones as standard... we're in ireland.

he went to get a tooth pulled a month or so ago and the dentist said he needed a load of work done and urged us to get the medical card so he could do it all for free. he's had about 6-8 done already and thats just on one side, he still needs the other side doing. all free and they look fab! dread to think what his mouth would look like if he was getting the dark ones.
