Any idea how much a single on the tube from kings cross to waterloo will cost on a thursday afternoon (off peak)?
The tfl website has no info whatsoever..

here you go

LeahE · 30/06/2006 16:01

A blinking fortune (£3) now they are trying to push anyone into using Oyster. Are you getting a train into KX? If so I'd look into how much it would be to get travelcard/underground journey included (may be less than £3, not sure). Alternatively if you are likely to come to London at any point in the future it may be worth buying an Oyster card - £3 to buy the card but then fares are half the price of cash.

CountessDracula · 30/06/2006 16:01

£3.00 unless you have an oyster card in which case £1.50

babyonboard · 30/06/2006 16:03

I live in london..but almost never get the tube..and when I do I get a travel card.lol
Is it worth getting an oyster card now, and I'll save in the future? I know you pay a £5 deposit, but I usually use rail, or dlr

babyonboard · 30/06/2006 16:03

thanks btw..i'm so rude! lol

OP posts:
LeahE · 30/06/2006 16:08

It's a £3 deposit, I think. And yes, worth it in my opinion. You save the money back if you make one return trip or two single trips by tube, so as long as you're planning to do that at some point in your life you're better off getting the card.

babyonboard · 30/06/2006 16:11

I will certainly..and will also get the bus a fair amount, can you use oyster on them?

Sorry for silly questions, we always walk or get trains most of the time..hehe

I had assumed it was a £5 deposit..maybe it changed since I last enquired!?

Only prob. is if I get an oyster card I won't be able to resist getting an orla keilly oyster card wallet from the tate..at great expense..snigger..

OP posts:
LeahE · 30/06/2006 16:14

Yes, you can use it on the buses (and it saves money on those too).

babyonboard · 30/06/2006 16:19

realy! thanks

I do get the bus occasionally..
I have been shocked how it's gone from 70p to £1.50 for a single in the space of 4 years..madness!

OP posts:
LeahE · 30/06/2006 16:23

Yes, I think it's ... umm ... £1 (?) on Oyster. Many of the recent price hikes have been an attempt to force people into getting them.

babyonboard · 30/06/2006 16:32

My oh is ead against them, as he hates all the 'tracking' that takes place..
he won't even use our nectar card either (but I do!lol)
Surely they can't, or perhaps more importantly no one would care to, track all your movements around town!?

OP posts:
Mercy · 30/06/2006 16:35

BOB, completely agree with you re bus fares.

I do not understand this Oyster card at all, it's really confusing

bran · 30/06/2006 16:42

If you buy a pay as you go Oyster card (rather than a travelcard) they can only track you if you register the card online, so don't worry about it.

LeahE · 30/06/2006 16:49

I agree with you that it's very unlikely anyone could be a*d to track you as an individual (unless you vanished or something, I suppose, when it might help to track your movements for the Crimewatch reconstruction ). I think the data is used more to work out things like "Ah, lots of people want to travel from X to Y at such-and-such a time of day!". In a country with a proper integrated travel system this might even result in improvements in travel planning. Hahahahahahahaha. As it is, they can't even get the train companies on board yet. Sigh.

Mercy - Buy Oyster card for £3 deposit. Charge it up with cash at machines, ticket offices, newsagents. Instead of buying tickets on tube or bus, touch card onto reader on your way into and out of tube stations and on your way into buses (they are a flat fare so no need to touch on the way out). Save lots of money (bus journeys are 80p [have now looked it up] instead of £1.50 and tube journeys are £1.50 instead of £3.00). That's all there is to it. But you can't use them on trains (unless you have a season ticket one rather than using prepay, but let's discount that for the time being).

LeahE · 30/06/2006 16:51

I think they could track you as you need to fill in a form when you get the card. But if you pay cash then you don't have to give your real name and address, I suppose.

babyonboard · 30/06/2006 17:01

No way! buses for 80p! thats so unfair..
Okay off to the newagents for an oyster card..lol

I am not remoptely concerned about being 'tracked' but dp is, he sent me a scary link detailing what info the national i.d cards will holdfd on them (all sorts!) but I know I just go about my boring business, and hey, at ;least if i'm ever accused of something I haven't done there'll be evidnece to put me elsewhere (actually judge, she was on the 14.27 bus from camberwell to victoria at that time )
snigger

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 30/06/2006 17:06

mine is pay as you go and you can put what you like on the form

babyonboard · 30/06/2006 17:09

ah but what if I credit it with say £50, then lose it and have just made up the details on the form..it's all lost!
lol

OP posts:
Mercy · 30/06/2006 17:12

LeahE, thank you very much for explaining that

One question, are they transferable or do they have your name on them? (ie, could dh and I have one between us - we rarely use public transport as a family anymore )

KBear · 30/06/2006 17:12

register it online and they'll replace it if you lose it.

foxinsocks · 30/06/2006 17:31

you'd never put £50 on it!

dh uses my pay as you go oyster card every now and then - I think it is only the season ticket ones you aren't supposed to share

babyonboard · 30/06/2006 17:32

foxinsocks why not? i'd rather top it up and not have to worry about it for ages than keep adding, or get it refused

OP posts:
babyonboard · 30/06/2006 17:34

and big thanks to all those explaining the ins and outs..
and for the revelation of how much cheaper it is!
sheeesh

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 30/06/2006 17:39

it's not that hard to top up - you can do it in newsagents

I think if you put that amount on it is better to register it online in case you do lose it!
