What would your feelings be about cloning a pet?

Is it ethical? Is it possible?

Just wanted to ask your advice, since Maxieboy's on his last legs. We got him from a rescue home, but this one brings the dogs to you to look at, rather that the heartbreaking looking round the pound. We chose him 'cos he came into the room, jumped straight on my lap and weed on me.

The children love him, I love him, even H loves him, and he's stopped digging up the garden now, mostly.

Is it ethical? Is it wrong? Is it right? Is it too dammned expensive?

I'd love your thoughts.

Blu is curiously obsessed with cats, haven't you noticed?

ScummyMummy · 27/06/2006 12:42

I have! She is an unashamed cat hater extrordinaire.

Gingerbear · 27/06/2006 12:44

was it only me that read the thread title as CLOTHING a pet?

expatinscotland · 27/06/2006 12:44

Wait, wait, now you've crossed the line there!

Cat hater?

Those are fightin' words, them!

ScummyMummy · 27/06/2006 12:46

She's a cat hater and proud, expat. Honest.

Annie, I know in my heart of hearts I couldn't do it/afford it. But I just wanted to pass it by you all. Thanks.

I know maxiethingy is a dog. And that's one thing. But it wouldn't take long for the Cat Owners to want one too, and as I say - 1 cat is more than enough.

And I'll have you know I contributed to moondog's Catfood thread (during MN food-feeding-frenzy week, you know when MN-ers were at each other with sharpened grissini sticks over everything from raw fois gras in lunchboxes to wholeweat pasta as a WMD) without making the slightest criticism of cats, and the horrible food they eat, with their heads tipped sideways, making that open mouthed "chlerk chlak" noise as they snatch at it.

But Earlgrey (and DON'T get me started on flavoured teas), how were you thinking of going about this cloning? A school science project for one of your children perhaps? How will you extract the bone marrow, or whatever god-awful visceral bits you need?

perhaps Tamum and / or martianBishop could help? they're really good at this sort of subject.

Good luck - post a pic in member Profiles when you e get MaxieBoy 11

tamum · 27/06/2006 13:03

I'm pretty sure the going rate is tens of thousands of dollars, and it's by no means foolproof. I wouldn't consider it, however hard it is to let go. Sorry

tamum · 27/06/2006 13:04

Spooky eh, I hadn't even seen your post Blu but up I pop

ScummyMummy · 27/06/2006 13:08

So what did you think of shoppingsecret's feline friends then, blu?

Got deja vu the other day when killing a headlouse. It looked very familiar and I'm sure I'd killed it before. Do you think my sons have been cloning their headlice? Or is just it an immortal indestructable louse?

Blu · 27/06/2006 13:15

Scummy - shoppingsecrets feline was a real pussycat.
Take that as you find it!

Blu · 27/06/2006 13:15

Anyway, earlgrey - I really am sorry to hear about your dog, and sorry if we have got a bit flippant.
I'm not sure cloning a pet - or even wanting to - would help children understand about how precious life is, or what it means to die.
