After five days in hospital, emkana's Sebastian has just had his second homecoming

First of all, thanks for all the messages I received on the birth announcement thread last week. I appreciated every one of them!

Secondly, an update on how we are. Last Wednesday I became increasingly concerned about ds's breathing, because it seemed very fast and laboured. When the midwife came she phoned the hospital straightaway, and we went to the paediatric ward where they kept us there and then. Over the next few days ds was dependent on oxygen, was given IV antibiotics and had all sorts of horrible investigations done to him, including various blood tests (his poor heel is pricked to bits) and a gastric tube down his throat, and a full skeletal x-ray.
The outcome was that he had viral pneumonia. He is now better and we are home again, but many, many questions remain over what brought this pneumonia on and what his general condition is. Today we saw a geneticist who is going to try and get to the bottom of it, but like so many of the other doctors we saw in hospital he said that he wasn't an expert in skeletal dysplasias and that it would probably take quite a long time until a final diagnosis could be made.

I've been to hell and back over the last few days, fearing that this was my worst nightmare turning into reality, then gradually feeling slightly more hopeful again as he improved. I am now happy to be home with him again, but also very fearful if he's going to be okay or if there is a setback just around the corner.

I'll just have to take it one day at a time, I guess.

Oh, love. I am so glad that this particular bit of the rollercoaster has levelled out.

LIZS · 26/06/2006 16:55

oh emkana I'm so sorry yur relief was so short lived. Maybe this will give renewed impetus to the investigations but do hope you can relax a little and enjoy him in the meantime.

niceglasses · 26/06/2006 16:57

Thought of you often. Hope things go fine for a while now.

cadbury · 26/06/2006 16:58

Oh you poor dears - I had hoped when I hadn't seen you around for a few days that you were just too busy enjoying Sebastian and getting to know each other. This must have been really scary for you. Hope you get answers quicker than you are expecting and no more nasty scares like this!

for you all.

coppertop · 26/06/2006 17:00

I'm glad ds is back home with you . Hopefully you'll start to get some answers about what is happening and be able to relax at last. xxx

Oh how rough for you all. Viral pneumonia at his age! On top of everything else. Hope hope hope things will run more smoothly and the LO will be well, and the diagnosis comes through easily. One day at a time...

SoupDragon · 26/06/2006 17:00

Glad to hear he's home again. I was wondering how you were doing.

geekgrrl · 26/06/2006 17:07

oh emkana, I'm sorry things aren't as easy as they could be. Poor little chap.
Have you been referred to an expert yet?

kid · 26/06/2006 17:09

Glad Sebastian is back at home with you where he belongs. Fingers crossed that they can make a diagnosis sooner rather than later.

FlameBoo · 26/06/2006 17:10

Oh no! I am glad you are home again now.

Emkana, sorry to hear you have been through all this - if it's any consolation my (now perfectly healthy) ds spent a day or two in special care because they were concerned about his breathing (can't remember the ins and outs of it but he was a big baby and quite sleepy at first and they were worried it was an indication of low blood sugar I think). It was awful having to see him go through all the blood tests, etc and not be able to have him with me all the time so I really feel for you going through this. Fingers crossed that this is just a coincidence and not related to any underlying condition

Lemmingswife · 26/06/2006 17:12

Oh, emkana - how very frightening for you.
Poor little Sebastian & poor you.
I am glad things have calmed down again.xx

Miaou · 26/06/2006 17:15

Oh emkana, what a frightening time for you all, on top of everything else that has happened!

I did wonder where you were last week and hoped you were just caught up in "newborn" stuff - so sorry to hear it was for such a sad reason.

(((hugs)))

mousiemousie · 26/06/2006 17:20

OMG I can't believe it, what a hideous time. Must be lovely to have him back home. Hope you can relax and enjoy your newborn again. He's obviously a fighter and that is a very good sign . You must be shattered Emkana - are you getting much practical support?

Poor little man, what a stressful time for you all. xxx

Thomcat · 26/06/2006 17:41

So glad little man is home with you. Praying for a speedy and positive diagnosis. Xx

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 26/06/2006 17:43

Em - thought of you today and did a search to see if you'd been posting.

Sorry that you've had such a tough, scary few days, but glad that you are home again.

Fio's suggestion of low muscle tone is very relevant as it can mean they can't cough too well. Hope the geneticists can help you. It's going to be a long road by the sounds. ((hugs))

Is he being referred to a skeletal expert Em? I have a friend whose ds has Hypochondroplasia and is looked after at GOSH. Also another online friend whose son has a skeletal condition. Just popping out now but will dig out some info.

saadia · 26/06/2006 18:02

Thinking of you and really really hoping that little Sebastian will be alright.
