Phil & Ted's buggy advice please!

I have a toddler and a new baby arriving in a couple of months. We thought we might buy a Phil & Ted's double buggy as they sound great and have a good re-sale value. But I just heard that you can't have the baby in the attachable baby bit, but not the toddler in the main bit. What do you do when the baby is in its bit underneath, but the toddler wants to get out? Do you have to move the baby up, and then down again when the toddler needs to get back in? That seems a bit mad - I'd be moving the baby about all the time, and what about if the baby's sleeping?

If this is right, then it isn't the buggy for me...

basically its advised that if only one child is in it then the child should use the front seat. however, as the baby will be light i wouldnt worry about toddler hopping in and out the front seat. this is when in 2 toddler mode.

if the baby is in the sleeping bit then it wont tip up at all.

clairemow · 26/06/2006 16:04

thanks misdee - is the sleeping bit the "cocoon" that costs even more? I'm a bit confused about what I need..!!

I can see that it might tip with a second toddler in the back, but not one in the front. Makes sense.

We've got one and it's very stable - although it's not recommended to let the 'top' toddler get out if there's a toddler underneath we ended up doing just that several times with no sign of the buggy tipping. In fact the only time it's tipped has been when my 4 yr old thought it would be fun to get into the back seat (with no one in the front) - and at his size I'm not surprised.
When the baby is in the swingy hammock flat bed (which is made from the fabric of the main seat) and there is a toddler on the 'clip on' seat above them, there is no chance of tipping at all.
I wouldn't bother with a cocoon for a summer baby (it's like a bag that you put the baby in and then you can lift it in and out of the flat bed bit easier) from what I've heard they are very warm, and the babies grow out of them within a couple of months. We put a pram mattress (mamas and papas standard size, cost £10) into the flat bed bit of ours then covered dd with a blanket.
It's a great buggy overall.

We've just been given one of these and I'm enjoying it as it's much less cumbersome than my side by side 3 wheeler. DS3 aged nearly 3 finds it tricky climbing out of the toddler seat when it's attached at the back but it's still a novelty so he'll struggle on.

We were given ours and the couple who gave it to us also have the carseat bit which they said they will also pass on to us when they get it out of the loft. I won't need it as ds4 is 1 now. Would you like it clairmow? I'll find out if it's the car seat or cocoon bit they have and get back to you on this thread.

misdee · 26/06/2006 16:28

i actually now have the old kiwi explorer, and find it much better than the e3 i did have and sold on.

clairemow · 26/06/2006 17:33

Thanks tallmummy, but I've already been offered one of the car seats - but that was really nice of you!

The heavier child must go in the front. So if you have a baby and a toddler, baby will go in the actual buggy and the toddler on the front attachment which can take up to 25lbs (at the back 15lbs). The buggy as a whole can take up to 40lbs.

clairemow · 26/06/2006 19:26

Thanks for all the advice. I think I really need to take DS into Mothercare and try it out, and the Jane powertwin, as I've heard good things about that too. DS is pretty large (tall, not fat!!!) for 2.1 - well over 25lb.... - so the E3 might not be our best bet anyway. If DS2 is as big as DS1 we might not even get 6 months out of it. If the buggy can only take 40lb, then DS at 30-something lb will take up most of that already!

misdee · 26/06/2006 19:33

its not just 25lb and 15lb at the back. i think you'll find its 25kg at the front, and 15kg at the back.

zippy539 · 26/06/2006 19:36

Ds was always jumping out, especially when dd (in the back) got bigger. I solved the tipping problem by getting a couple of flat weights from the supermarket and putting them under the padded bit of the front seat. Worked a treat.

misdee · 26/06/2006 19:38

From the phil and teds site on weight limits. HTH>

  1. What are the maximum weight limits in the various positions? Single buggy (Toddler or Newborn) 25kg?s

Double (Toddler-Newborn) 25kg?s in the front seat (toddler), no maximum weight limit on newborn position (designed for up to a 6 month old)

Double (Toddler-Toddler) 25kg?s in the front seat, 15kg?s in the rear seat

clairemow · 26/06/2006 19:45

oh ok, 25 kg - very different to 25 lb!!!! He def isn't over 25 kg!! Now that would be huge for a 2 year old!!!!

Have I got it wrong then. At the moment I put ds4 aged 1 in buggy and ds3 aged 3 in the seat attached at the back. Should it be the other way round - I've no idea how much they weigh in pounds let alone kgs.

I can only put the toddler seat on the front if the buggy seat is fully reclined - is that correct?

misdee · 26/06/2006 19:58

tall mummy, yes it should be the other way round, and you can only put the toddler seat on the front if the main seat is fully down into baby hammock.

cheesecakelover · 26/06/2006 21:25

Sorry, I am a bit rubbish when it comes to remebering if it's lbs or kg!

clairemow · 26/06/2006 22:04

It all sounds v. complicated... which seat goes where, which child goes where etc. etc.

Hi Clairemow - see our expecting in sept thread for discussions re double pushchairs! I just bought a P&Ts and I think our DS's are similar age. Only bought it after rigourously trying out friends but have now been completely converted and it's way better than the Jane one I tried.

If you do go for it don't buy from mothercare I saved loads of money by going to a local shop. Got E3, doubles kit, double cover and cocoon for £359and solved the no shopping basket problem by adding the pannier bags which are really spacious. Using it already as a single and love it.

Cocoon will be nice for sept babies but also good that they unzip so double as a portable playmat/easy access for changing! Alsomy freind felt that without it her newborn might have been bounced around a bit much.

liquidclocks · 26/06/2006 22:26

PS our DS is also tall for age. When we puthim in the e3 he looks a lot less cramped than in his maclaren stroller which also professes to do until age 4 - if hemakes it to age 3 in that one I'll be surprised!

Having sung the e3's praises though - I'm still planning on using the maclaren and a sling when I go shopping in town - much easier in terms of getting around the shops. It's beenokin boots, woolworths etc. but next and other clothes shops have not been so good, I kept catching things.

notsoladyjess · 26/06/2006 22:46

we got one when ds2 arrived and it has been great! from seeing the posts, it seems we have been putting them in the wrong way (heaviest in the back, oohh dear!).

i would highly recommend. my 2.5 year old likes to walk a lot so we just have the second seat on and if he wants to rest for a bit he just jumps in.

we also have mclaren and buggy board but to be honest it got to be a bit of a pain and i found it hard to walk with the bloody buggy board clipping my ankles!!
