I was just about to buy a booster seat for my 4 year old ds, when someone told me that it was going to be against the law shortly to have one without a back. Has anyone else heard about this, I can't find it anywhere on the internet that says so.

Yes My friend bought one without a back last week and the man in the shop told her that too, but I hae checked the new car sear laws and it just says a booster , not a specific one with a back... will be watching this...

A Booster seat has a back
A Booster cushion doesn't

So I've been told......but I have no evidence to back it up

i thought it was a booster seat that was required not necessary one with a back?

TinyGang · 23/06/2006 16:11

I thought the same as fairydust. Also I can't fit 3 proper booster seats/cushions in the back of my car and older dd 7yrs (who is tall) sits on a normal cushion in the middle instead.

I've found this on the uk department of transport website and that says that a booster with a back should be used till there 6}

How confusing. First they say:

booster seats - for children from 15 kgs and up (from approx 4 years);

booster cushions - for children from 22 kgs and up (from approx 6 years).

Which does seem to imply that 'seats' means with backs, whereas 'cushions' means without.

Then further down they say:

15-25kgs (4 to 6 years)
A forward-facing seat or booster which can be used in the front or rear of the car. The booster seat lifts the child and positions the adult lap and diagonal seatbelt correctly. DO NOT use on a passenger seat fitted with an active front airbag unless your vehicle manufacturer confirms it is safe.

22-36kgs (6 to 11 years)
A forward-facing seat or booster which can be used in the front or rear of the car. The booster seat lifts the child and positions the adult lap and diagonal seatbelt correctly. DO NOT use on a passenger seat fitted with an active front airbag unless your vehicle manufacturer confirms it is safe.

So which is it?

But we've gone for seats with backs for both our 3 and our 5yos, as they are more comfortable, the children can sleep in them, and above all they are safer than backless booster cushions.

Yes I find it really confusing...

Children between 4 and 6 can use a booster with a back, and children over 6 can just use a booster with no back, is that right?

Because both the boys I look after have backless boosters and they are 4 and 6, so is this wrong?

Plus , I dont see how the law is exempt in taxi's etc, if its dangerous not to be restrained in a parents car, how are they that much safer in a taxi that they dont need restraining? It seems a bit of a half- hearted attempt .

ok just done some googling on this and from what i can gather a booster seat is hard moulded and a booster cushion is what it describes a cushion a soft booster only. Dont think the fact of whether it has a back or not is actually addressed in the law?!
